vi-sarjanīya

(fr. vi-sarjana) seeﾠ vrata-visarjanīya;
m. (cf. vi-sarga above) N. of a symbol in grammar (usually marked by two perpendicular dots <:> representing a hard andﾠ distinctly audible aspiration;
it generally, but not always, occurs at the end of a word, often taking the place of final s andﾠ r;
it is called Visarjanīya either from its liability to be « rejected» orﾠ from its being pronounced with a full « emission» of breath, orﾠ from its usually appearing at the « end» of a word orﾠ sentence;
Paṇḍits in some parts of India seem to pronounce a vowel after it, e.g.. naraḥ like naraha, agniḥ like agnihi) Prāt. Pāṇ. etc.
