1 -born o borne?-
Borne è il participio passato di to bear nel suo significato di “dare, produrre, sostenere, sopportare”: She has borne him five girls, gli ha dato cinque figlie; Responsibility must be borne by the individual, la responsabilità deve essere assunta dall'individuo; The additional costs must be borne by the customer, i costi aggiuntivi devono essere a carico del cliente. -
2 -can o may?-
May I suggest a few amendments?, posso suggerire alcuni cambiamenti? In effetti questi verbi possono essere ambigui: He can walk to school potrebbe significare sia “ha il permesso di andare a scuola a piedi” che “è in grado di andare a scuola a piedi”; He may leave tomorrow potrebbe significare sia “ha il permesso di partire domani” che “è probabile che parta domani”. -
3 -in the end o in the finish?-
Nota d'usoLa parola fine può essere tradotta in diversi modi, ma il sostantivo “finish”, in questa accezione viene usato solo nell'espressione: from start to finish, dall'inizio alla fine. L'espressione avverbiale alla fine, invece, corrisponde a “in the end”: Alla fine decisero di non venire, in the end they decided not to come (non in the finish they decided not to come). Quando si vuole indicare la fine di qualcosa, si usa la locuzione “at the end”: alla fine di dicembre, at the end of December; alla fine della strada, at the end of the street. -
4 -to intend o to mean?-
Nota d'usoBisogna fare attenzione a non confondere i verbi to intend e to mean. To intend è usato principalmente con il significato di “avere intenzione di”, “volere”, e viene spesso seguito da un altro verbo: He intended to kiss her that night, aveva intenzione di baciarla quella sera. Anche to mean significa “avere intenzione di”: He meant to come, aveva intenzione di venire. Il significato principale di to mean, però, è “intendere” nel senso di “voler dire”, “significare”: What do you mean?, che cosa vuoi dire? Non si può usare to intend in questo senso. Non si può dire What do you intend? -
5 -to remember o to remind?-
Nota d'usoNon si deve confondere l'uso dei verbi to remember e to remind che si traducono entrambi con ricordare. To remind è usato nel senso di “far venire in mente”, “richiamare alla memoria”: Mi ricordi mia sorella, you remind me of my sister; Ricordami di spegnere la tv, remind me to switch off the TV. To remember significa “ricordarsi di qualcosa” ed è generalmente usato in senso riflessivo: Non riesco a ricordarmi il suo nome, I can't remember his name. Di conseguenza, he remembered me significa si ricordava di me, mentre he reminded me (that we were late, to wash the dishes) significa mi ha ricordato (che eravamo in ritardo, di lavare i piatti). -
6 -to try-
Nota d'usoa to try to do st. esprime il tentativo, lo sforzo di fare qualcosa: I'll try to fix it, proverò ad aggiustarlo, cercherò di aggiustarlo. In alcuni casi è possibile usare la forma to try and: We should try and help them, dovremmo cercare di aiutarli. La costruzione to try and è considerata più informale ed è usata unicamente quando to try si trova nella sua forma base, non declinata, quindi solo all'imperativo e all'infinito o dopo un verbo modale; perciò una frase come Try and come!, prova a venire! è corretta, mentre We tried and helped her e He is trying and studying harder non sono frasi accettabili.b to try doing st. indica il tentativo di fare qualcosa per vedere se è utile o efficace, o se funziona: Try turning it this way, prova a girarlo da questa parte; Next time why don't you try asking him more politely?, la prossima volta perché non provi a chiederglielo in modo più cortese?; Try putting some fresh basil in the sauce, it's delicious!, prova a mettere un po' di basilico fresco nel sugo; è squisito! -
