Besides being a major tourist attraction, they provide music in the form of love songs for weddings, birthdays and quinceañeras (special parties for Mexican girls who have reached their 15th birthday). [músico] mariachi (musician)MARIACHIA mariachi band may contain from six to eight violinists, two trumpeters and a guitarist, as well as other more specialized instruments, such as the “guitarrón” (an outsize, deep-toned guitar), the “vihuela” (a high-pitched guitar), and the harp. As well as providing the music for songs, mariachi music serves for dancing as well, often with foot-stamping steps which descend from Spanish Flamenco. Mariachi music began to acquire its current popularity in the 1930s, when band members began wearing the typical “charro” outfit that is familiar today - the short black jacket, tight trousers and wide-brimmed “sombrero” hat, all with silver trimmings. Mariachi bands were once a common sight at baptisms, weddings and national celebrations, and might even be hired to serenade a loved one, though nowadays they are less common, due to the high cost of contracting their services.mariachi2 adjMéx Fam ham-fisted;Celia es bien mariachi para cocinar Celia is hopeless at cooking* * *I m mariachi bandII m/f mariachi player* * *mariachi nm: mariachi musician or band -

1 sanctimoniousness* * *SF2) * = santidad3) Caribe (Rel) religion of African origin* * *santería (↑ santería 1)santeriaA religious cult, fusing African beliefs and Catholicism, which developed among African Yoruba slaves in Cuba. Followers believe both in a single supreme being and also in orishas, deities who each share an identity with a Christian saint and who combine a force of nature with human characteristics. Rituals involve music, dancing, sacrificial offerings, divination, and going into trances.* * *santería nf1. [beatería] sanctimoniousness2. [religión] santeria, = Afro-Cuban religion3. Am [tienda] = shop selling religious mementos such as statues of saintsSANTERÍAOn Cuban plantations, African slaves (mostly of the Yoruba tribe) were banned from practising their own religion, so devised a way to worship their gods (“orishas”) by giving them the names of Christian saints. For example, they changed the name of the thunder god “Changó” to “Santa Bárbara”, and “Ochún”, the goddess of love, was identified with “la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre”, Cuba's offical Catholic patron. Despite the disapproval of the Catholic authorities, santería (as this “saint worship” is known) and its rituals have survived into the present, with some forms even becoming a tourist attraction. -

79 Saint Vincent, Cape of
(Cabo São Vicente)Considered by ancient geographers as the westernmost point of Europe, Cape Saint Vincent was known as the "Sacred Promontory" on ancient maps (Promontorium Sacrum). It is the southwesternmost point of Portugal, some 250 kilometers (118 miles) south of Lisbon. On this bleak, barren cape or nearby at the site of Sagres, Prince Henry of Aviz (Prince Henry the Navigator) was active in promoting the exploration of the Atlantic and the African coast south of Morocco. It is an important tourist attraction, despite its location. -
80 Sintra, National Palace of
Located off the main square in the town of Sintra, the National Palace is one of the country's oldest royal residences. Together with its rich mixture of architectural styles from different eras and cultures, the National Palace's long history of being the place where monarchs and councils made historic decisions makes the site today an especially appealing tourist attraction. With its origins in a 14th-century Gothic palace of the era of King Dinis (r. 1279-1325), this monument was added onto and altered in the course of the 15th century. It was in this palace that King João I made the vital decision in 1415 to send an expedition to capture Ceuta in Morocco, the beginning of Portugal's overseas empire. The most important additions to the palace, however, came between 1505 and 1520 under King Manuel I, and the Manueline architectural style was added to the original Gothic. The two massive Gothic kitchen chimneys from an earlier era were incorporated and not changed. Into the Manueline style was blended a strong Moorish art element including decorative tiles or azulejos and an adapted interior mosque, which was converted into a chapel. The National Palace contains the largest repository of the oldest azulejos, some dating to the 15th century, of any palace in Portugal. Among the unusual rooms must be counted the council room (with an ocean view), the Swan Room, and the Magpie Room, with rare, painted ceilings.Historical dictionary of Portugal > Sintra, National Palace of
