Мор, Томас (1478, Лондон - 1535) - англ. державний діяч, есеїст. Освіту отримав в одній з лондонських шкіл та ун-ті Оксфорда. Член парламенту (1504), лорд-канцлер (1529). Один із близьких друзів Еразма Роттерд омського. Поділяв його оцінку ранньохристиянської етики. Першою літературною спробою була "Історія Короля Ричарда III" (1512 - 1518), - майстерна історіографічна праця, написана лат. та англ. мовами. "Утопія" - найвідоміший твір М. Назва його походить від гри значень двох грецьк. слів; ou-topos ("неіснуюче місце") та eu-topos ("гарне місце"). В "Утопії" змальовується ідеальне місто-держава, в якому суспільні та політичні інституції керуються у своїй діяльності нормами розуму. Найвищою метою і благом життя у цьому ідеальному, з точки зору М., суспільстві є задоволення, втіха Щ. об досягнути її найвищої міри, необхідно встановити устрій комунного типу (на кшталт зображеного Платоном), але зі збереженням сім'ї. М. також заторкував питання державного контролю за освітою, релігійної терпимості, соціальної рівності чоловіків і жінок. Моральні орієнтації індивіда мають бути спрямовані на дотримання природних задоволень, схвальне ставлення до простоти (навіть спрощеності) у стосунках та засудження прагнення до багатства й станових переваг. До задоволень вищого ґатунку, що їх має домогтися індивід, М. також відносив шукання довічного блага, яке залежить од Божого провидіння.[br]Осн. тв.: "Утопія" (1516). -
