Происхождение слова остается неясным, его возводят то к шотландскому "yankie" (= "умная женщина"), то к искаженному в произношении индейцев слову "English", но чаще всего его связывают с фламандским прозвищем голландца "Jan Kees" (= "Сырный Ян"). К XVIII в. так называли американца-иммигранта из Голландии, потом любого американского колониста. Это значение - "американец" - сохранилось у англичан и сегодня в краткой форме "Yank"2) Северянин, житель одного из северных штатов. В этом значении было особенно распространено на Юге во время Гражданской войны [ Civil War], когда так называли солдат армии Союза [ Union]. В лексиконе ультра-патриотов Юга до сих пор носит презрительный оттенок3) Ныне жители южных штатов называют так жителей северных, те - жителей Новой Англии, жители Новой Англии - жителей штата Коннектикут, а последние охотно называют так сами себя. Прообразом изворотливого янки из Коннектикута [Connecticut Yankee] послужил Скользкий Сэм [Sam Slick], персонаж канадского писателя-юмориста Т. Халибертона [Haliburton, Thomas] (1796-1865), а самым знаменитым янки из Коннектикута стал старший мастер оружейного завода ["the Boss"] из романа М. Твена [ Clemens, Samuel Langhorne (Mark Twain)] "Янки из Коннектикута при дворе короля Артура" ["Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court"] (1889).2.диалект "янки"Новоанглийский диалект, особенно проявляющийся в произношении.
