    CAJA DE AHORROS
In Spain, apart from the conventional banks, there are also cajas de ahorros (savings banks). These usually carry the name of the region or province where they are based, e.g. “Caja Soria”, “Caja de Andalucía”. They differ from conventional banks in that part of their profits has to be reinvested in social projects or cultural events which benefit their region. As with other banks, though, many savings banks have merged to form large banking corporations so as to be more competitive.
