  • 58 -can o to be able to?-

    Nota d'uso
Quando si parla di abilità al presente l'uso di can o to be able to è indifferente dal punto di vista grammaticale. Tuttavia, normalmente si tende ad usare can: Can you drive?, sai guidare? a meno che non ci siano delle condizioni per cui ci siano dubbi sulle capacità di una persona in un particolare momento. Se la persona a cui ci si rivolge non si sente bene, ad esempio, si preferisce usare to be able to: Are you able to drive?, sei in grado di guidare? Al passato semplice, le due forme possibili sono could e was/were able to. Se si vuole sottolineare un'abilità in generale, non c'è differenza d'uso: I could (o was able to) swim when I was five, sapevo nuotare a cinque anni. Se invece si pone l'enfasi su un risultato da ottenere, si deve utilizzare was/were able to o, in alternativa, il verbo to manage: Were you able to (o Did you manage to) get a newspaper?, sei riuscito a prendere un giornale? (non Could you get a newspaper? che sarebbe inteso come una richiesta: prenderesti un giornale?). Al futuro e nei tempi composti è possibile utilizzare solo la locuzione to be able to: I haven't been able to finish the report, non sono riuscito a finire la relazione; I'll be able to finish by Friday, riuscirò a finire entro giovedì.

English-Italian dictionary > -can o to be able to?-

  • 59 -can't o don't?-

    Nota d'uso
I can't hear the radio!

    English-Italian dictionary > -can't o don't?-

  • 60 -company o firm?-

    Nota d'uso
“Firm” viene attualmente utilizzato soprattutto per indicare studi legali e simili: Lavora in uno studio legale, he works for a law firm.
