Капра и Рискин не хотят строить плотное и линейное драматургическое действие на основе материала, идеально подходившего для этих целей (борьба банкира с чудаками, живущими в нужном ему здании); они предпочитают выразить базовую ситуацию через серию ярких отрывков, букет неожиданных и блестящих вариаций. Авторы пренебрегают механическими аспектами сюжета и создают живописный и детальный портрет каждого персонажа. Поскольку персонажей в фильме изрядно, это придает картине оригинальную структуру, в которой Капра, превосходно работающий с актерами, с удивительным мастерством создает равновесие между групповыми сценами (фильм близок к тому, чтобы побить рекорды по их изобилию) и сценами парными.
