Гашение дуги в дугогасительном устройстве осуществляется её интенсивным охлаждением и деионизацией или дроблением на несколько коротких дуг. В электрических аппаратах на напряжения до 1000 В дугогасительное устройство — камера из дугостойкого материала (например, керамики, асбоцемента, асбодина и специальных пластмасс), внутри которой делаются перегородки. Электрическая дуга затягивается в камеру магнитным полем, создаваемым током отключения или постоянными магнитами. В результате охлаждения дуги стенками дугогасительного устройства и деионизации сопротивление её резко возрастает, при этом сила тока в цепи уменьшается до нуля.
В дугогасительном устройстве газовых выключателей на напряжения свыше 1000 В электрическая дуга охлаждается либо потоком газа, образующегося в результате разложения трансформаторного масла, либо потоком воздуха или шестифторовой серы (элегаз), подаваемых под давлением в зону горения дуги. В дугогасительном устройстве магнитных выключателей дуга охлаждается в керамической камере, куда она затягивается мощным магнитным полем, которое создаётся отключаемым током. В дугогасительном устройстве вакуумных выключателей контакты размываются в среде с давлением 10-4 н/м2 (10-6 мм рт. ст.). Образовавшаяся на контактах дуга гаснет при прохождении переменного тока через нуль, благодаря рассасыванию заряженных частиц в вакууме и высокой электрической прочности разреженной среды.
Разновидность дугогасительного устройства — деионная решётка, состоящая из нескольких плоских ферромагнитных (омеднённых) или медных пластин, изолированных друг от друга и расположенных так, чтобы дуга легко входила в решётку. Магнитное поле дуги, замыкаясь через пластины, втягивает дугу в решётку; при этом она разбивается на несколько коротких дуг. После прохождения переменного тока через нуль на каждой паре пластин образуется высокая электрическая прочность промежутка порядка 100—200 В. Деионная решётка применяется также в автоматах гашения поля генераторов переменного тока (см. Гашение магнитного поля).
