Ряд индексов курсов акций, которые ежедневно, за исключением субботы и воскресенья, публикует “Файнэншл таймс” и которые являются показателем/барометром цен акций на Лондонской фондовой бирже. Актуарные индексы курсов акций “Файнэншл таймс” (The Financial Times Actuaries Share Indexes) рассчитываются Институтом актуариев страховых обществ как взвешенное среднеарифметическое курсов набора бумаг 54 различных секторов рынка (средств производства, потребительских товаров и т.д.), распределенного затем по отдельным отраслям. Они широко используются инвесторами, менеджерами портфелей ценных бумаг и др. Наиболее обобщенное представление о состоянии рынка дает Индекс всех акций - Эф-Tu-Eй (FTA All-Share Index), учитывающий курсы примерно 800 акций и ценных бумаг с фиксированной процентной ставкой (до октября 1992 г. - 657), часть из которых представляет финансовый сектор. Он рассчитывается по завершении ежедневных операций и охватывает 98 % рынка и 90 % его оборота по стоимости. Мировой индекс акций Эф-Ти-Эй (FTA World Share Index) начал рассчитываться с 1987 г. и включает 2400 цен акций 24 стран. Индекс курса обыкновенных промышленных акций “Файнэншл тайме” (Financial Times Industrial Ordinary Share Index) (или FT- 20) отражает движение акций 30 ведущих промышленных и торговых лидеров, которые были выбраны не потому, что по ним можно судить о положении на Фондовой бирже, но потому, что они отражают состояние британской промышленности; именно поэтому среди них нет акций банков, страховых компаний и правительственных ценных бумаг. Этот индекс представляет собой невзвешенное среднегеометрическое их курсов, которое рассчитывается каждый час вплоть до 16.30. Первоначально базой индекса служил 1935 г., который был взят за 100. Многие годы этот индекс был основным ежедневным барометром состояния рынка. Он продолжает публиковаться, но роль основного показателя перешла к Индексу 100 акций Фондового рынка “Файнэншл таимо (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Share Index) (FT -SE 100 или FOOTSIE), который представляет собой взвешенный арифметический показатель, отражающий движение цен 100 ценных бумаг; базой индекса служит 3 января 1984 г., взятое за 1000. Этот индекс рассчитывается каждую минуту. Набор учитываемых в нем компаний и организаций, критерием отбора которых является уровень их рыночной капитализации, который должен превышать 1 млрд. ф. ст., пересматривается каждый квартал. Этот индекс стал рассчитываться для того, чтобы оказать поддержку развитию фьючерсных контрактов на основе рынка акций в Великобритании. В 1992 г. на его базе стали рассчитываться в реальном времени еще два индекса: Эф-Ти-Эс-И 250 средних (FT-SE Mid 250), включающий компании с уровнем капитализации от 150 млн. ф. ст. до 1 млрд., и Эф-Ти-Эс-И актуарный индекс 350 (FT-SE Actuaries 350). Для обоих базой служит 31 декабря 1985 г. Эти индексы в свою очередь разбиты на Промышленные корзины (Industry baskets), включающие акции всех отраслей промышленности, деление которых примерно соответствует отраслевому делению на рынках Нью-Йорка и Токио, что дает возможность сразу получить представление о положении промышленности на рынке в целом. Эф-Ти-Эс-И индекс малой капитализации (FT- SE Small Cap Index) охватывает 500-600 компаний с капитализацией от 20 до 150 млн ф. ст. и рассчитывается в конце операционного дня как с включением инвестиционных компаний, так и без них. Индекс правительственных ценных бумаг “Файнэншл тайме” (Financial Times Government Securities Index) отражает движение правительственных ценных бумаг (особо надежных). Самые новейшие индексы измеряют показатели ценных бумаг на Европейском рынке. Индекс 100 Европейского фондового рынка “Файнэншл тайме” (Financial Times-Stock Exchange Eurotrack 100 Index) (FT-SE Eurotrack 100) представляет собой взвешенный средний показатель 100 ценных бумаг в Европе. Его расчет был начат 29 октября 1990 г., за базу 1000 была взята ситуация на момент окончания операций 26 октября 1990 г. Индекс, рассчитываемый в немецких марках, использует цены из Эс-И-Ей-Кью (SEAQ - Stock Exchange Automatic Quotation) и Эс-И-Ей-Кью Интернэшнл и последние текущие курсы валют. 25 февраля 1991 г. впервые появился Индекс 200 Европейского фондового рынка “Файнэншл тайме” (Financial Times-Stock Exchange Eurotrack 200 Index); имея ту же базу, что и Индекс 100 Европейского фондового рынка, он объединяет показатели ценных бумаг, учитываемых в этом индексе, и ценных бумаг, учитываемых Индексом 100 акций фондового рынка (FT- SE 100).

Публикуемый газетой “Файнэншл таймс” индекс акций к цене товара (например золота). Таким образом, владелец облигации “быка” при ее погашении получит сумму, превышающую номинал облигации, если соответствующие индекс или цена поднимутся (и, наоборот, меньше номинальной стоимости, если цена или индекс упадут). С облигацией “медведя” (bear note) происходит обратное. Следовательно, облигации “быка” и “медведя” похожи на обыкновенные, но в то же время являются еще и опционом, открывающим возможности для хеджирования и спекуляций.
