125 American Anti-Slavery Society
истОбщенациональное общество аболиционистов [ abolitionists], наиболее известная организация, выступавшая против рабства перед Гражданской войной [ Civil War]. Основано в 1833 У. Гаррисоном [ Garrison, William Lloyd]. В числе основателей были братья Таппан [ Tappan, Arthur; Tappan, Lewis] из Нью-Йорка. Призывало к немедленному освобождению рабов и предоставлению им равных прав. Издавало газету "Освободитель" [The Emancipator]. Постепенно значительная часть членов дистанцировалась от радикальных взглядов Гаррисона, хотя в 1839 сторонники Гаррисона получили контроль над организацией. Более умеренные члены организации образовали Общество борьбы с рабством в Америке и за границей [American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society].
