16 αὔω 2
αὔω 2.Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `get a light, light a fire' (ε 490). On the meaning Borthwick, Class. Quart. 63 (1969) 296.Compounds: ἐν-αύω `kindle' (Hdt.); - ἐξ-αῦσαι ἐξελεῖν (H., Pl. Com.) mit ἐξαυστήρ `fire-tong, κρεάγρα' (A.); - κατ-αῦσαι καταντλῆσαι (cod. καταυλῆσαι), καταδῦσαι H.; also καθαῦσαι ἀφανίσαι H.. - Further πυραύστης m. `moth that gets singed in the candle' (A.), πυραύστρα f. `pair of fire-tongs', πύραυστρον n. `id.' (Herod., cod. πύραστρον), all from πῦρ αὔειν. - Also with analogical loss of σ, γοιν-αῦτις οἰνοχόη H.Etymology: The connection with fire seems secondary. Then αὔω may be from *αὔσω or *αὔσι̯ω, to ONo. ausa and Lat. hauriō (with secondary h-); the form would have pilosis. S. Schulze, Kl. Schr. 191 - S. also ἀφύσσω.Page in Frisk: 1,193Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > αὔω 2

17 εὕω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `singe' (Il.).Other forms: Aor. εὗσαι,Derivatives: εὕστρα ( εὔσ-) f. `place for singeing' (Ar. Eq. 1236), `roasted barley' ( PTeb. IIIa), `id.' (Paus. Gr.); εὑστόν ( εὑσ-) n. `singed sacrifice' (Miletos IV-IIIa); εὔσανα = ἐγκαύματα (Poll., H.). Very unclear Εὖρος, s. v.Etymology: Old verb, pushed out by καίω, which like other verbs with ευ-diphthong (s. γεύομαι) lost ablaut. εὕω is identical with Lat. ūrō `burn', Skt. óṣati `id.'; so with aspiration metathesis for *εὔhω \< IE *éus-ō (cf. Schwyzer 219). The - σ- returns in εὑσ-τόν (with secondary full grade against Skt. uṣ-tá- = Lat. us-tus `burned') and in εὕσ-τρα (with analogical aspiration; on τρᾱ- cf. Schwyzer 532, Chantraine Formation 333), and was from there introduced in εὔσ-ανα (Stang Symb. Oslo. 2, 66). Also elsewhere (e. g. the zero grade German. l-deriv. in OWNo. usli m., MHG. usel(e) f. `glowing ashes'). S. Bq, Pok. 347f., W.-Hofmann s. ūrō.Page in Frisk: 1,596-597Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > εὕω

19 πυρακτέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to harden in fire, to burn to coal' (ι 328, Nic. Th. 688).Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: Tradit. taken as a comp. of πῦρ and ἄγειν with the meaning `turn about, around in the fire' (e.g. Bechtel Lex. s.v.), semant. and morpholog. both unsatisactory, as ἄγειν cannot mean `turn around' and a mediating *πύρακτος `turning around in fire' (Bechtel) would be without example (rather *πυρ-άκ-της, which however could hardly have meant sthing else but `fire-driver'). -- Without doubt expressive enlargement in -( α)κτέω from πυρ-άζω (EM 697, 16; Stolz WienStud. 25, 234 w. n. 1 a. lit.), *-ασσω v.t. like ὑλακτέω from ὑλάω (beside ὑλαγμός a.o.), ἀλυκτέω from ἀλύω, ἀλύσσω; on the last mentioned cases Frisk Eranos 50, 8 ff. Cf. πυρακ-τόομαι after the many intransitives in - όομαι with factitive - όω.Page in Frisk: 2,629Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πυρακτέω
