продавать. Но есть нюансы. Когда мы что-то выгодно продадим (по сути - кого-то слегка обманем), то довольно говорим: "Во клиент купился!" А в Америке совершенно тот же смысл связан не со словом "купить", а со словом "продать". To sell означает не только продавать, а и обманывать, надувать.Под девизом "Let us pee for you!" вам могут, к примеру, втюхать приборчик, который вместо вас пописает для анализа (см. цв. илл. (Чего только не продают! Это реклама необходимого каждому американцу устройства. "Уриноватор" способен пописать за вас для анализа: "Let us pee for you!" Правда, это только для мужчин, в рекламе подчеркнуто: "...выглядит как реальная штука". Это чтоб инспектор не сомневался, что всё вытекло у него на глазах прямо из вас. См. комментарии к слову "sell".) к слову SALE). Называется "Уриноватор" (а вы думали только у нас есть новаторы?). Гарантируются естественная видимость процесса и отличное качество мочи (опираясь на которое вы в любом суде докажете, что не пили и наркотиков не употребляли, очень может пригодиться). Мы соображаем не хуже, но задачи решаем несколько иные. Слышали, как у нас бабушки подрабатывают? Продают мочу призывникам (тоже на анализы), чтобы тех в армию не взяли.Sell (to) — в переносном смысле относится, как и у нас, к предательству.
Sell-out — предатель. To sell out ( to sell down the river) - предавать.
Sell a wolf ticket (to) — блефовать, "втирать очки", врать.
Sell (somebody) the idea (to) — убеждать. Как видите, иногда фигуральное использование слова не имеет негативного оттенка. Выражение "I sold him the idea" (Я его убедил) довольно распространенное и вовсе не означает, что ваша идея - надувательство, или что вы ее буквально "продали".
