29 Mann, Anthony
1906-1967Nacido en Point Loma, hoy integrado en la ciudad de San Diego, California, hijo de emigrantes alemanes, trabaja como actor en Nueva York, ciudad a la que se habian trasladado sus padres. De actor pasa a ser regidor y, algo despues, director. Segun sus propias palabras, trabajo y aprendio mucho con hombres de teatro como Rouben Mamoulian, David Belasco y Chester Erskine. A finales de 1937 lo encontramos trabajando para David O’Selznick como director de casting.Finalizada esta etapa breve, se introduce en Paramount, donde aprende verdaderamente el oficio de director. Asi, en 1942 tiene su primera oportunidad como tal; la pelicula, un inteligente producto de serie B, se llamaba Dr. Broadway. En la serie B permanecio Mann durante varios anos, trabajando para Universal (una vez), Republic, RKO y Eagle Lion hasta que, en 1949, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lo contrata para hacer un punado de peliculas que, si no disponian de presupuestos muy generosos, si le otorgaron la posibilidad de rodar su primer western, La puerta del Diablo (luego pasaria a ser el tercero porque Winchester 73 y Las furias se estrenaron antes). Tan to La puerta del Diablo como Las furias, que rodo para Paramount, tienen tintes shakespearea nos, especialmente la segunda, y desde luego son westerns con un elevado grado de madurez, westerns “distintos”. Pero sera ese mismo ano, 1950, el que vera nacer la primera de un conjunto de peliculas modelicas, cinco en total, dirigidas por Anthony Mann y protagonizadas por James Stewart, que consolidaran al realizador como uno de los iconos del western moderno. Aunque en lo sucesivo se alternaran en la filmografia del director los westerns y los filmes de otro tipo, por ejemplo, los grandes espectaculos visuales como El Cid (1961) y La caida del imperio romano (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1963), dirigidas en Espana para Samuel Bronston, Mann sera, ya para siempre, “el hombre del oeste”. Budd Boetticher, Delmer Daves, John Ford, Ho ward Hawks, Anthony Mann y Sam Peckinpah son, por orden alfabetico, los grandes nombres del western. A ellos se pueden acercar Henry Hathaway y William A. Wellman, pero probablemente el primero de todos es Anthony Mann, autor de una obra rica y coherente en la que combina a la perfeccion el espacio abierto y sus cualidades, con el ser humano y sus pasiones. El dolor mitico asociado a la venganza lo expresa James Stewart, el actor clave de los westerns de Mann, de modo incomparable, aunque hay que detenerse en la leccion, que roza lo sublime, que nos dictan, a duo, director y actor, en este caso Gary Cooper, en esa obra maestra que se llama El hombre del Oeste. Tenia fama de ajustarse estrictamente al guion, sin permitir modificacion alguna, lo que le condujo a discusiones con algunos de los actores bajo sus ordenes. Cuando se retira, en 1959, ha dirigido ya 120 peliculas de casi todos los generos y pe lajes. 1902-1971Nacido en la ciudad de Mulhouse, entonces alemana, hoy francesa, de padres judios de origen suizo, William Wyler sufrio los efectos de la Primera Guerra Mundial en su ciudad, que paso definitivamente a manos francesas como consecuencia del Tratado de Versalles. Estudio en Lausanne, en el Instituto de Segunda Ensenanza y en la Escuela Superior de Comercio. Tras ser expulsado de esta institucion, trabajo en Paris algun tiempo antes de volver a la casa familiar. Recomendado a su tio Carl Laemmle, magnate de la Universal, marcha a los Estados Unidos, donde desde chico de los recados llego, a los 23 anos, a dirigir su primera pelicula, Crook Buster, cortometraje de dos bobinas. Su primer largometraje data de 1926, y su primera pelicula sonora, de 1930, es precisamente un western, Hell’s Heroes. Su etapa mas fecunda, hasta su encuentro providencial con la actriz Bette Davis, fue en la productora de Samuel Goldwyn, para la que rodo algunos filmes que le hicieron destacar como director, en particular Calle sin salida (Dead End, 1937), cuyo evidente origen teatral ponia de manifiesto mas si cabe la maestria de Wyler en la direccion de actores y en la creacion de ambientes. Desde Jezabel (Jezebel, 1938) en adelante, Wyler se iria consolidando como uno de los grandes directores del cine americano. Algunas de sus peliculas, como Cumbres borras cosas (Wuthering Heights, 1937), La senora Miniver (Mrs. Mini ver, 1941) o Vacaciones en Roma (Roman Holiday, 1953), son clasicos de todos los tiempos. Olvidado a raiz de su mastodontico Ben-Hur (1959), ha sido reivindicado en los ultimos anos como un modelo a seguir en lo relativo a la gramatica del relato cinematografico. En el terreno que nos ocupa, Wil liam Wyler ha dirigido un gran western, El fo rastero, con una pareja protagonista dificil de mejorar. 1904-1977Delmer Daves, que con el tiempo seria uno de los hombres claves del western norteamericano, nacio en San Francisco poco antes del famoso terremoto que destruyo la ciudad. Estudiante de leyes, cuentan que sintio de repente la fascinacion del desierto. A su vuelta de una larga y solitaria estancia en tierras de Arizona con los indios Hopi y Navajo, decidio hacer cine. Un primer contacto con los estudios californianos no lo disuadieron, sin embargo, de interrumpir sus estudios universitarios, pero despues de terminar estos volvio a Hollywood, donde consiguio un contrato como guionista. Las dos peliculas mas famosas que escribio en la decada de los 30 fueron El bosque petrificado (The Petrified Forest, Archie Mayo, 1936) y Tu y yo (Love Affair, Leo McCarey, 1939). De esta ultima existe un remake, realizado tambien por Leo McCarey, en 1957, An Affair to Remember, interpretada por Cary Grant y Deborah Kerr, que en Espana se titulo, como el original, Tu y yo y que es una de las cumbres del melodrama. Su primer filme lo dirige en 1943; se trata de la pelicula de propaganda belica Destino: Tokio (Destination Tokyo), que a pesar de los condicionantes de su gestacion resulto ser una obra muy estimable. En 1950 dirige un western seminal, Flecha rota; sera el primero de los suyos y una obra fundamental para abrir nuevos senderos argumentales al genero, en este caso el de la dignidad del nativo americano. Parece que el asunto le tocaba de cerca porque es tambien guionista, aunque en esta ocasion no director, de la pelicula de Robert D. Webb, White Feather (1955), con el mismo tono reivindicativo del indio americano que Flecha rota. Toda la decada de los 50 esta dominada, en la filmografia de Delmer Daves, por el western, hasta el punto de que apenas dirige, en esa decada, peliculas que no pertenezcan al genero. Cierto es, por el contrario, que en los anos 60, en que realizara sus ultimas peliculas, se consagra casi en exclusiva al melodrama, en un registro muy diferente del que le hizo alcanzar grandes alturas como creador cinematografico, sin que eso quiera decir que estas ultimas peliculas sean desdenables. Hom bre de estilo invisible, enormemente eficaz, es sin lugar a dudas Delmer Daves uno de los grandes directores de westerns. Posee un universo propio, que le hace brillar en el terreno narrativo tanto co mo en el conceptual. Su mirada tolerante y solidaria, al tiempo que comprensiva; su consideracion del ser humano como algo lleno de flaquezas pero rico en posibilidades; la idea de camaraderia, puesta de manifiesto en las situaciones menos propicias, hacen que sus peliculas puedan servir como modelos de cine maduro, que trasciende los limites originales del genero para ahondar en la naturaleza humana. El tren de las tres y diez y El arbol del ahorcado estan a la altura de los mejores westerns nunca realizados; Flecha rota, Jubal, La ley del talion y Cowboy se acercan mucho a los mejores. 3.VT (=look nice on) favorecer, sentar bienBECOME, GO, GET The translation of become/go/ get depends on the context and the type of change involved and how it is regarded. Very often there is more than one possible translation, or even a special verb to translate get + ((adjective)) (e.g. get angry - enfadarse), but here are some general hints.
Become {etc} + adjective
► Use pon erse to talk about temporary but normal changes:
I got quite ill Me puse muy malo
He went pale Se puso blanco
You've got very brown Te has puesto muy moreno
He got very angry Se puso furioso ► Use vol verse to refer to sudden, longer-lasting and unpredictable changes, particularly those affecting the mind:
He has become very impatient in the last few years Se ha vuelto muy impaciente estos últimos años
She went mad Se volvió loca ► Use que dar(se) especially when talking about changes that are permanent, involve deterioration and are due to external circumstances. Their onset may or may not be sudden:
He went blind (Se) quedó ciego
Goya went deaf Goya (se) quedó sordo
Q uedar(se) is also used to talk about pregnancy:
She became pregnant (Se) quedó embarazada ► Use hac erse for states resulting from effort or from a gradual, cumulative process:

The pain became unbearable El dolor se hizo insoportable ► Use lle gar a ser to suggest reaching a peak:

► Use hac erse for career goals and religious or political persuasions:

He became a member of the Green Party Se hizo miembro del Partido Verde ► Use lle gar a + ((noun)) and llegar a ser + ((phrase)) for reaching a peak after a period of gradual change. This construction is often used to talk about professional accomplishments:
