In den USA sind high schools weiterführende Bildungseinrichtungen für alle Jugendlichen im Alter von 15 bis 18 Jahren (neunte bis zwölfte Klasse), Junior high schools beginnen bereits mit der siebten Klasse. Wenn die Schüler die zwölfte Klasse mindestens mit dem Prädikat "zufriedenstellend" abschließen, erhalten sie auf einer feierlichen Zeremonie ihr Highschool-Diplom. Zu diesem Anlass kaufen sie sich auch häufig einen besonderen Jahrgangsring. Viele amerikanische Teenieserien und -filme beschäftigen sich mit der high school und mit allem, was dazugehört. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei dem Sport, vor allem Football und Basketball, und dem senior prom, dem Abschlussball. Elles sont en général réservées aux enfants de l' Establishment ou de milieux aisés, car le coût de la scolarité y est très élevé, notamment dans les plus prestigieuses d'entre elles ( Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby).
