1 ἅρπη
ἅρπη, ἡ, unknownA bird of prey, prob. shearwater, [Ἀθήνη] ἅρπῃ ἐϊκυῖα τανυπτέρυγι λιγυφώνῳ Il.19.350
; a sea-bird acc. to Arist.HA 609a24, cf. Ael.NA2.47, Dionys.Av.1.4 (describing the Lämmergeier).II sickle, = δρέπανον, Hes.Op. 573, S.Fr. 424;καλαμητόμος A.R.4.987
: hence, the scimitar of Perseus, Pherecyd.11J., cf. E. Ion 192 (lyr., pl.).2 elephant-goad, Ael.NA13.22.3 metaph. of a hippopotamus' tooth, Nic.Th. 567.4 bill-hook, J.AJ14.15.5.5 kind of fish, Marc.Sid.22. (Cf. Lat. sarpio, sarpo, etc.) -
2 ἅρπη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `sickle' (Il.), also a bird of prey (metonym. after the claws; Bechtel Lex., Thompson Birds).Derivatives: Acc. to Leumann Hom. Wörter 294, the bird comes from the interpretation of Homer; not convincing.Etymology: ἅρπη agrees with OCS srъpъ, Latv. sirpe `sickle'. Further, one compares Lat. sarpiō and sarpō, sarpere `trim, prune (vine)', but the vocalism is difficult (s. Schrijver 493: from sarriō). If we suppose IE origin, " ἄρπη a un vocalisme ambigu" says EM, with which they must mean that it is difficult to explain. I agree with EM and am inclined to assume a non-IE word (for the concept Beekes, 125 J. Indogermanistik.) - OIr. serr is also doubtful, s. Vendryes. - For oriental origin Grimme, Glotta 14, 17). - To take ἅρπη as the basis of ἅρπαξ, ἁρπάγη, ἁρπάζω is improbable; thus Szemerényi, Syncope 205, 213.Page in Frisk: 1,150Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἅρπη

3 ὅρπηξ
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `sprig, twig, (shaft of a) spear' (Φ 38, Hes. Op. 468);Compounds: εὑ-όρπηξ `with fair twigs' (Nonn.).Derivatives: No derivv.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Formation like σκώληξ, κάχληξ, νάρθηξ a.o. (Chantraine Form. 381, Schwyzer 497), without certain etymology. Acc. to Walde (-P.) 1, 277 a. 2, 502 as a supposition to Lith. várpa `ear' (unconvinving on várpa Fraenkel s.v.), not very illuminating. Not with Brugmann Grundr.2 I 477 to Lat. sarpō `trim the vines', sarmentum `osiers' (cf. on ἅρπη `sickle'). Rather with Curtius 265, Bechtel Glotta 1, 73, Lex. s.v. to ἕρπω (first from *ὅρπος, -η?), but prob. not in the gen. a. secondary meaning `go, move', but rather as "the crawler, the sneaker" referring to a slow and regular, movement over the ground. -- Diff. Gonda Mnem. 3:6, 160 ff.: to IE * ser- `(pointed) twig' (?) w. farreaching combinations; Haas Ling. Posn. 7,75: "Pelasgian" to Lith. vir̃bas `twig'. - Rather a Pre-Greek word; note the suffix -ᾱκ-.Page in Frisk: 2,427Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ὅρπηξ
