   Créé en août 1996 à Paris par Olivier Gainon, CyLibris (de Cy, cyber et Libris, livre) est le pionnier francophone de l’édition électronique commerciale. CyLibris, "l’éditeur découvreur de talents", est en effet est la première maison d’édition à utiliser l’internet pour publier de nouveaux auteurs littéraires. Vendus uniquement sur le web, les livres sont imprimés à la commande et envoyés directement au client, ce qui permet d’éviter le stock et les intermédiaires. Au printemps 2000, CyLibris devient membre du Syndicat national de l’édition (SNE). En 2001, certains titres sont également distribués par un réseau de librairies traditionnelles et numériques. En 2003, le catalogue de CyLibris comprend une cinquantaine de titres (littérature générale, romans policiers, science-fiction, théâtre et poésie). Par ailleurs, l’équipe de CyLibris lance en mai 1999 Edition-actu (appelé d’abord CyLibris Info), une lettre d’information électronique gratuite dont le but est de proposer un autre regard sur l’édition. Elle compte 1.800 abonnés en février 2004. Elle cesse courant 2004. En avril 2006 est lancé le blog de CyLibris.

   Le web est d’abord conçu comme un grand livre composé de pages reliées entre elles par des liens hypertextes, et reproduisant les modèles connus de l’édition papier. On appelle cette étape le web 1.0. S’y superpose ensuite un réseau de sources d’information structurées. En plus d’un grand livre, le web devient une gigantesque base de données, avec l’apparition d’une nouvelle génération de sites interactifs, connue sous le nom de web 2.0.

   Professeur au département d’études françaises de l’Université de Toronto (Canada) et créateur de ressources littéraires librement accessibles en ligne, Russon Wooldridge fonde en mai 2000 le Net des études françaises (NEF), suite au colloque qu’il organise pour un groupe de professionnels francophones (Colloque international sur les études françaises favorisées par les nouvelles technologies d’information et de communication, Toronto, mai 2000). Le NEF se veut d’une part "un filet trouvé qui ne capte que des morceaux choisis du monde des études françaises, tout en tissant des liens entre eux", d’autre part un réseau dont "les auteurs sont des personnes oeuvrant dans le champ des études françaises et partageant librement leur savoir et leurs produits avec autrui". Russon Wooldridge y propose notamment NEFbase, un ensemble de bases de données textuelles interactives fonctionnant sous TACTWeb (TACT: Text Analysis Computing Tools). Le NEF est référencé dans les Signets de la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). Par ailleurs, Russon Wooldridge est l’un des membres fondateurs du David Trott Crossroads Centre, créé en 2004 par les départements de français, d’allemand et d’italien de l’Université de Toronto.
