Существительное характер ('совокупность психических особенностей человека') передается английскими nature, temper, disposition и character. Nature и temper имеют в виду характер человека, проявляющийся в поведении, привычках, повседневном общении с другими людьми, причем nature подчеркивает мысль о врожденных свойствах: nothing could change his difficult (cruel) nature; he was a cruel man by nature. Temper имеет в виду характер, сложившийся в результате жизненного опыта и общения с людьми и изменяющийся под их воздействием: her temper improved with years. Disposition имеет в виду характер как преобладающее настроение, расположение, склонность: a man of sullen (joyful, pleasant) disposition. Character оценивает психический склад, характер человека с точки зрения принятых морально-этических норм как сильный, слабый, достойный и т. д.: a man of strong (weak, noble) character. Следует помнить, что английское существительное character имеет ряд значений, не свойственных слову характер: 1) 'фигура, личность': public character; 2) 'действующее лицо в пьесе, романе': cast of characters, character in a novel; 3) 'оригинал, чудак' (в выражениях типа quite a character); 4) 'репутация': excellent character; 5) 'письменная рекомендация, характеристика': to come with a good character.Трудности английского языка (лексический справочник).
