1894-1982Nacido en Galveston, Texas, proyeccionista de peliculas, operador de noticiarios y director de cortometrajes, realiza su primer largometraje en 1919 y poco despues, con Tintin de mi corazon (Peg o’My Heart, 1922), alcanza su primer exito, que revalidara en El gran desfile (The Big Parade, 1925) y en …Y el mundo marcha (The Crowd, 1928). Cuando llega el cine sonoro, King Vidor es ya uno de los directores de mas prestigio en el mundo entero. Se valoraba su capacidad de experimentacion visual, sus hallazgos tematicos, todo un universo, en fin, que el director iba creando poco a poco, a medida que dirigia peliculas. El prestigio se mantuvo hasta el fin de su vida, aunque fueron apareciendo dudas aqui y alla. Sin duda uno de sus filmes sonoros mas apreciados, discutidos e influyentes es el western Duelo al sol, magnifico y desmesurado fresco historico, que pone enfasis en lo individual a traves de una supuesta leyenda india. Siguiendo su inveterada costumbre, el productor David O. Selznick intervino mas de lo debido en la realizacion, contratando y descontratando directores, interviniendo personalmente, de forma que una de las tareas de investigacion mas arduas que puede acometer el investigador del western es delimitar la “autoria”, si se me permite la expresion, de la pelicula. Hombres como Otto Brower, William Dieterle, Sidney Franklin, William Cameron Menzies o Josef Von Sternberg intervinieron sin duda en algun momento de la produccion, preproduccion o posproduccion; he optado, sin embargo, por reconocer solo la participacion de William Dieterle, ademas, claro, de la de quien firma la pelicula, que no es otro que King Vidor.Billy the Kid (Billy the Kid o El terror de las praderas). 1930. 95 minutos.
