5 -to provoke o to cause?-
Nota d'usoI verbi to provoke e to cause significano entrambi “provocare”, ma esprimono due significati diversi. To provoke, infatti, viene usato quando si provocano dei sentimenti (di solito negativi): I've been provoked, sono stato provocato. To cause, invece, significa provocare nel senso di “portare a un risultato”: A drunk driver caused the accident, un guidatore ubriaco ha provocato l'incidente (non A drunk driver provoked the accident); Smoking causes cancer, fumare provoca il cancro. Esistono alcuni contesti in cui questi due verbi sono intercambiabili perché si provocano allo stesso tempo conseguenze e sentimenti: to cause (o provoke) a reaction, provocare una reazione; to cause (o provoke) an argument, provocare un litigio. -
