13 παλάθη
Grammatical information: f.Meaning: `cake made of conserved fruits' (Hdt. 4, 23, Thphr., LXX).Other forms: παλάσιον bel.Derivatives: Dimin. παλαθ-ίς f. (Ph. Bel., Str.), - ιον n. (Polem. Hist.), also παλάσ-ιον (Ar. Pax 574; v.l. - θιον); - ώδης 'π.-like' (Dsc.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: If, as probable, to πλάσσω (s.v.), only in ablaut deviating from second part of the compounds κορο-, πηλο-πλάθος and from πλάθανον (s.v.). The same (disyll.) root has been supposed in παλά-μη, παλα-στή, but a root * plh₂- cannot have given πλα-; full grade in πέλα-νος ? Cf. also πλάξ (which cannot have a disyll. root). After Prellwitz however to πλῆθος, πίμπλημι, but * pleh₁- is here impossible. -- Or an adapted foreign word (quite hypothetic etymology by Lewy Fremdw. 77; s. also Grimme Glotta 14, 17)? To be rejected Specht Ursprung 255: θ from IE. th. - Furnée 259 cites παλάσια τὰ συγκεκομμένα σῦκα. καὶ διὰ τοῦ θ παλάθια H.; the variation θ\/σ shows that it is a Pre-Greek word.Page in Frisk: 2,464Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > παλάθη

14 σαρδάνιον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: μειδιᾶν, γελᾶν; σαρδάνιος γέλως `to laugh bitterly, sneeringly, to laugh; sneering laughter' (υ 292, Pl., Plh. etc.); v. l. and late also - όνιον, - όνιος (- ώ-) after Σαρδόνιος `Sardinian'; σαρδάζων μετὰ πικρίας γελῶν Phot., Suid.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Origin debated. By the ancients partly connected with σέσηρα (thus still Bechtel Lex. s. v. with morpholog. argumentation), partly with a plant growing in Sardinia ( σάρδ-ιον, - άνη, - όνιον), of which the use produced a spasmodic laughing. Further Kretschmer Glotta 34, 1ff. with new hypothesis: to the peaple's name Šardana (neighbours of Egypt) referring to σαρδανάφαλλος γελωτοποίος H.; in detail unclear. To be rejected Zupitza BB 25, 96: to Welsh chwarddu `laugh'.Page in Frisk: 2,678Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > σαρδάνιον
