Основан в 1864 как Австрийский музей искусства и промышленности (Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie). Старое здание построено архитектором Г. Ферстелем, новое - архитектором Л. Бауманом (Baumann Ludwig, 1853-1936). Музей располагает двумя выставочными залами, имеет филиал во дворце Гаймюллер (Geymüllerschlössel), дополнительное помещение в парке Аренберг (Arenbergpark).
