Spanish sources gloss sarape as a brightly colored wool or cotton blanket with a hole in the center for a person's head.

An inexpensive, shapeless garment, or a blanketlike cloak tied around the neck with a knot. The OED indicates that it was worn by Indians, and Watts says it was used by the poor. Santamaría references it as a cotton or wool blanket worn by poor peasants. It is worn like a cloak or mantle, and has a hole in the center for the head to fit through. The DRAE indicates that it is secured by a knot at the shoulder. Cobos references it as a kind of poncho. -
