113 Alpaca Wool
This is obtained from the domesticated alpaca, an animal resembling the angora goat, but smaller, and is variously white, reddish-brown, or black; fibre 6 to 8-in. long, with a uniform diameter, slightly wavy, smooth and fine. It is chiefly used for ladies' dress cloths and lounge jackets. Spun into counts 28's and heavier, also 2/40's and 2/36's from the finer wools. Hosiery yarns are also made from alpaca wool, mostly soft spun in natural shades. -
114 Bleaching
The series of operations through which grey cloths pass in order to whiten them. In the early history of bleaching the process was carried out in open fields, and it was only possible to bleach fabrics in the summer months. All fibres have some colour, and to obtain a pure white cloth this natural colouring matter has to be bleached out. Thus the main object of bleaching is to remove from the fibre all colour and impurities, and the processes employed will depend upon these impurities and the material itself. There are a great number of methods in use, but all are for the purpose of removing fatty and waxy matters, mineral matter and colouring matter. The diagram gives the sequence of operations usual for bleaching cotton fabrics -
115 Boiled-Off Silk
BOILED-OFF SILK, IIThe product of the boiling-off (also called, degumming) process, in which raw silk, thrown silk, or fabricated silk is subjected to a treatment in hot water, soap and other solutions to dissolve and remove the gum or sericin, which is the coat protecting the clean fibre filaments of a thread from becoming separated, and to remove tints, dirt and other foreign substances which are not inherent in the nature of the silk. (Official definition, U.S.A.) ————————BOILED-OFF SILK, IUndyed thrown silk which has had the natural gum removed by boiling in soap solution. This process of boiling-off removes about 25 per cent of the weight. It is a necessary operation (same as degumming). Before boiling-off the thread is harsh, stiff and dull, but afterwards it is soft, flexible and lustrous. -
116 Burring
This is a process in wool yarn manufacturing to extract burrs, seeds, vegetable matter, etc., from the raw wool. These impurities are destroyed without injury to the fibre by the chemical action of dilute sulphuric acid. They are also removed mechanically by the burring machine. The chemical method is preferred for wools containing a large quantity of small impurities, while the burring machine is usually employed for fine wools, as the natural strength and colour of the fibres is preserved. -
117 Crimp
The natural waviness of the wool fibre. Uniformity and abundance of crimp indicate superior wool. The term is sometimes applied only to merino wools where the waves are frequent and sharply defined, leaving the term waviness to describe other wools not possessing this feature to such a high degree. ———————— One official definition gives this as a term synonymous with the French word " crepon." " A good crimp " means also a " good pebble " in finished crepe-de-Chines. The word " crimp " is sometimes used mistakenly instead of " take-up." -
118 Cucura
The fibre surrounding the wood of this plant (Daphne Lagetta) forms a close texture of regular natural matting. The natives of Panama soak it in water, beat it, and then use it for garments, beds, sails and cordage. -
119 Fibres
The textile fibres of commerce are very numerous. They are usually placed in " three natural classes, vegetable, animal and mineral. The rayon filaments so far produced are all vegetable. " Vegetable fibres can be classified as follows: - Seed fibres, growing from the seeds or seed-capsules of certain plants, as cotton, Bombax, Asselepias, etc. Stem fibres, growing in the bast of certain plants, as flax, hemp, jute, etc. Leaf fibres, occurring in the leaves of certain plants, including New Zealand hemp, Manila hemp, etc. Fruit fibres, of which the sole member worth mentioning is the cocoanut fibre. Artificial fibres, represented by viscose, cellulose acetate, cuprammonium and nitrocellulose rayon. The chief fibres in the animal class are wool, silk, and the various kinds of animal hair such as camel, llama, angora, rabbit, horse, etc. The chief member of the mineral group is asbestos, a substance that resists the action of fire. Gold, silver and copper used in the making of tinsel yarns are not fibres as they do not require to be spun. Cellulose-Acetata Rayon - Filaments composed of an acetic ester of cellulose coagulated or solidified from its solution. Cuprammonium Rayon - Filaments composed of regenerated cellulose which has been coagulated or solidified from a solution of cellulose in ammoniacal copper oxide. Nitro-cellulose Rayon (Chardonnet) - Filaments composed of regenerated or denitrated cellulose which has been coagulated or solidified from a solution of nitrated cellulose. Viscose Rayon - Filaments composed of a regenerated cellulose which has been coagulated or solidified from a solution of cellulose xanthate. The preceding four definitions are proposed by the American Society for Testing Materials, Corn. D-13 -
120 Grass Cloth (Canton Linen)
A plain weave fabric made in China from ramie yarns. It is woven on hand looms in coarse reeds and with few picks. The natural lustre of the yams is not interfered with, as the fabric is used in the loom state. A small quantity is dyed blue, or bleached and used for dresses, but the bulk of the cloth is used for table covers in the loom state. Widths are 15-in. or 16-in. and lengths 30 yards, made on native looms. A fabric made of yarn spun from nettle fibre was also known as grass cloth.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Grass Cloth (Canton Linen)
