L’idée du copyleft est lancée en 1984 par Richard Stallman, programmeur et défenseur inlassable du logiciel libre au sein de la Free Software Foundation (FSF).Conçu à l’origine pour les logiciels, formalisé par la licence GPL( general public license) du Projet GNU, et étendu ensuite à toute oeuvre de création, le copyleft (dont voici le texte officiel et la traduction française non officielle) contient la déclaration normale du copyright affirmant la propriété et l’identification de l’auteur. Chez les auteurs et les créateurs numériques, les adeptes du copyleft sont de plus en plus nombreux, afin de respecter la vocation première du web, réseau de communication et de diffusion à l’échelon mondial. Créée en avril 1997 par des chercheurs du Media Lab du MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Etats-Unis), la société E Ink (Electronic Ink) développe une technologie d’encre électronique (appelée elle aussi E Ink). Prise entre deux feuilles de plastique souple, l’encre électronique consiste en des millions de microcapsules contenant chacune des particules noires et blanches en suspension dans un fluide clair. Un champ électrique positif ou négatif permet de faire apparaître le groupe de particules souhaité à la surface du support, afin d’afficher, de modifier ou d’effacer des données. Le but étant à terme de proposer un papier électronique sur support souple. En juillet 2002, E Ink présente le prototype du premier écran utilisant cette technologie, développé en partenariat avec les sociétés Toppan et Philips. En avril 2004, Sony lance au Japon le Librié, le premier ebook (appareil de lecture) utilisant cette technologie. La commercialisation de cet écran d’une diagonale de 6 pouces est effective en avril 2004, pour le Librié de Sony (suivi ensuite de l’iLiad d’Irex Technologies et puis du Sony Reader en décembre 2006). Suivent les supports souples utilisant la technologie E Ink, qui seront produits notamment par Plastic Logic en Europe et LG.Philips LCD en Asie.
