Почти садистская жестокость, характерная для множества картин студии «Paramount», снятых в 40-е гг. (особенно с участием Алана Лэдда), находит историческое оправдание благодаря центральной теме фильма. В самом деле, ведь в этом фильме обличается рабское положение матросов торгового флота в XIX в. Джон Фарроу придает самым жестоким эпизодам (бичевание, драки, убийства) неоспоримую силу и достоверность. Персонажам порой не хватает масштабности или глубины, но это вина сценария, а не актеров. В кадре собраны все «тяжеловесы» студии «Paramount» (Донлеви, Алберт Деккер и др.), и все работают прекрасно. Еще один недостаток сценария: некоторая (без сомнения, намеренная) мягкотелость, которая мешает фильму раскрыть выбранную тему до конца. Лишние мелодраматичные линии (мальчик, тайком пробирающийся на борт, чтобы наняться в матросы; пассажирка-испанка, завязывающая романтическую интригу с героем Лэдда) рассеивают зрительское внимание и лишают фильм цельности.
