Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ IEph 9:1. The figure is carried out thus: the parts of the ‘crane of Christ’ are the cross (Hdt. 2, 125 μηχ. ξύλων=‘made of wood’) and the Holy Spirit, the latter being the rope. The crane brings the stones, symbolizing Christians, to the proper height for the divine structure (cp. Chrysostom, Hom. 3 in Eph ὥσπερ διά τινος ἕλκων μηχανῆς εἰς ὕψος αὐτὴν [sc. ἐκκλησίαν] ἀνήγαγε μέγα; Martyr. Andreae 1, 14 [Aa II/1, 55] ὦ σταυρὲ μηχάνημα σωτηρίας).—DELG.
