68 -activity o business?-

73 -chi-
Nota d'uso1 Quando i pronomi chi, ( che) cosa, che, quale o quanto sono il soggetto di una proposizione interrogativa, diretta o indiretta, nella corrispondente frase inglese l'ausiliare to do di norma non si usa: Chi te l'ha detto?, who told you? (anziché who did tell you?); Che cosa accadde al testimone?, what happened to the witness? (anziché what did happen to the witness?); Quale funziona meglio?, which of them works better?; Mi chiese quale funzionasse meglio, he asked me which of them worked better (anziché he asked me which of them did work better).Lo stesso vale quando il soggetto è un nome preceduto da un aggettivo interrogativo ( che, quale, quanto): Quante persone hanno assistito al concerto?, how many people attended the concert? (anziché how many people did attend the concert?); Ignoro quante persone abbiano assistito al concerto, I don't know how many people attended the concert.L'ausiliare to do (come accade anche nelle frasi affermative) è usato solo nei casi, abbastanza rari, in cui si intende dare particolare enfasi all'enunciato: Allora, chi è stato a dirtelo? (o Chi mai te l'ha detto?), who did tell you?; Che cosa accadde effettivamente al testimone?, what did happen to the witness?2 Quando i pronomi e gli aggettivi interrogativi non sono soggetto, nelle proposizioni interrogative dirette l'ausiliare to do deve essere usato e precede il soggetto: A chi l'hai detto?, who did you tell?; Che cosa pensate dell'idea?, what do you think about the idea?Lo stesso vale per gli altri ausiliari e il verbo to be: Chi siete?, who are you? (you è il soggetto, who il nome del predicato); Che CD hai acquistato?, what CD have you bought?Nelle proposizioni interrogative indirette l'ausiliare to do invece non si usa e il verbo to be e gli altri ausiliari normalmente non precedono il soggetto: Mio fratello le chiese che cosa volesse, my brother asked her what she wanted (non My brother asked her what did she want); Non so chi siano, I don't know who they are (non I don't know who are they).Tuttavia, se il soggetto è composto da parecchie parole, può accadere che sia preceduto anziché seguito da to be o dall'ausiliare: Le chiesi chi fosse il ragazzo con cui aveva parlato tutta la sera, I asked her who was the boy she had been talking to the whole evening (in alternativa a I asked her who the boy she had been talking to the whole evening was). -

75 -I'm sorry o excuse me?-
In generale, questa espressione viene utilizzata quando si vuole attirare l'attenzione di qualcuno: Excuse me, do you know where the nearest bank is?, mi scusi, sa dov'è la banca più vicina? Per scusarsi di qualcosa di concreto si usano invece le locuzioni I'm sorry e my apologies for, o il verbo to apologise: I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, mi scuso per non aver risposto prima; The soup is still cold, my apologies; la zuppa è ancora fredda, scusatemi. Excuse me può essere usato per chiedere perdono quando si commette una gaffe: Excuse me, I don't remember your name, scusi, non ricordo il suo nome; Excuse me, I gave you the wrong change, mi scusi, le ho dato il resto sbagliato. -

77 -salted, salty o savoury?-
78 -to break o to break down?-
79 -to exaggerate, to overdo o to go too far?-
Quest'ultimo, infatti, è usato soltanto quando si sovrastima qualcosa: I'm not exaggerating, there were a hundred people at the party, non sto esagerando, c'erano cento persone alla festa. Quando invece si vuole sottolineare che si è ecceduto in qualcosa si può usare semplicemente la locuzione too much o too many: I cooked too much rice, ho esagerato con il riso; I've made too many sandwiches, ho esagerato con i panini (non I've exaggerated with the sandwiches). In alternativa si può usare il verbo to overdo: I overdid it yesterday, I'm aching all over, ieri ho esagerato, mi fa male dappertutto. To go too far viene usato quando il comportamento di una persona è eccessivo e porta a conseguenze negative: I'm sorry I upset you, I went too far, mi dispiace di averti turbato, ho esagerato.English-Italian dictionary > -to exaggerate, to overdo o to go too far?-

80 -to lose time o to waste time?-
Nota d'usoL'espressione italiana “perdere tempo” non va sempre tradotta letteralmente usando il verbo to lose. Quando si vuole indicare uno spreco di tempo, il verbo appropriato è to waste: Don't waste time playing videogames, non perdere tempo con i videogiochi. To lose time è usato quando capita un imprevisto che interrompe un'azione in corso, spesso in contesti sportivi: He lost a lot of time when he spun off the road, ha perso molto tempo quando è uscito fuori strada.English-Italian dictionary > -to lose time o to waste time?-
