1 λάμπω
Grammatical information: v.Other forms: aor. λάμψαι, fut. λάμψω (IA.), perf. 3. sg. λέλαμπε with pres.-meaning (E.; Wackernagel Synt. 1, 167, Schwyzer 772), aor. pass. λαμφθῆναι (J.),Derivatives: 1. λαμπάς, - άδος f. `torch, torch-race' (IA.), also poet. adj. `torch-lit ' (S.); with λαμπάδιον `small torch' (Att.); λαμπαδ-ίας m. name of a comet and of the constellation Aldebaran (Chrysipp.; Scherer Gestirnnamen 121 f.), - ίτης `torch-runner' (Pergamon IIIa; Redard 242); λαμπάδ-ιος `from a torch' (pap.), - ιεῖος `id.' (Delos IIIa; Schwyzer 468, Chantraine Form. 93), - ικός `id.' (sch.); λαμπαδεῖον `toch-holder' (Eleusis IVa; like λυχνεῖον). Denomin.: a. λαμπαδίζω `participate in a torch-run or a torch-procession' with λαμπαδισταί pl. `participants in a toch-run' (Delphi II a; Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 71 f.); b. λαμπαδεύομαι, - εύω `id., treat as a λαμπάς' (D. S., Ph.) with λαμπαδεία ` torch-procession' (Priene III-IIa). - 2. λαμπτήρ, - ῆρος m. `lighter, torch, lantern' (Od.), with λαμπτήρια n. pl. name of a feast (pap.). 3. λάμψις f. ` lighting' (LXX, Ph.), esp. in compp. as διάλαμψις (Arist.) etc. On λαμψάνη ` cabbage, `Brassica arvensis's.v. 4. λαμπηδών, - όνος f. `lustre, glance' (Epicur., D. S.). 5. λαμπυρίς f. ` glow-worm' (Arist.) with λαμπυρίζω ` light as a glow-worm', also `enlighten' (Thphr., pap.), dissimilated from *λαμπ-υλίς? (Leumann Glotta 32, 223 n. 2; but s. below). - 6. λαμπρός `lighting, gleaming' with λαμπρότης, λαμπρύνω `enlighten', midd. `show' (IA.), with λαμπρυν-τής (late); as 1. member w. dissim. in Λάμπουρος name of a dog (Theoc.), - ουρις f. `fox' (A. Fr. 433, Lyc.). -- 7. ὑπο-, περι-λαμπ-ής `blow resp. roundabout lighting' (Hes. Sc., Ph., Plu.). -- 8. Lengthened verbal forms: ptc. λαμπετάων (- όων) `lighting' (Λ 104); explanation uncertain, s. Schwyzer 705, Leumann Hom. Wörter181 f., Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 358; λαμπάζω = λάμπω (Man.). - 9. Several PN: Λάμπος, Λαμπετίδης, Λαμπετίη, Λάμπιτος, - τώ, Λαμπαδ-ίων, - ίσκος, Λαμπ(τ)ρεύς; s. Bechtel Histor. PN 621, Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 236, Schwyzer 337.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: The forms, both the verbal and the nominal, go back on a λάμπω (Schwyzer 692). - Withou nasalwe find in Hitt. lap-zi `glow', lap-nu-zi `bring in glow, kindle' (MudgeLang. 7, 252, Benveniste BSL 33, 140). Further, with long vowel, IE. * lāp- or * lōp-, some Baltic words for `torch, flame': Lith. lópė, Latv. lāpa, OPruss. lopis; with short a-vowel, but deviating in auslaut, Celt., OIr. lassaim `flame', Welsh llachar `glow', which can go back on * laps-. - Further combinations in Bq and WP. 2, 383; also Fraenkel Wb. s. lópė. Cf. also λοφνίς. It is doubtful whether this material proves IE origin. On λαμψάνη s. v., id. λοφνίς. Are λαμπ-ηδών, λαμπ-υρίς Greek? A nasal present is also difficult (* lh₂mp-?).Page in Frisk: 2,79-80Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λάμπω

2 λέπας
Grammatical information: n. (only nom.-acc. sg.)Meaning: `bare rock, mountain' (Simon., A., E., Th.).Derivatives: λεπαῖος `rocky' (E.); λεπάς, - άδος f. `limpet' (Alc. Z 36, 2 [not certain], Epich., com., Arist.), as the animal clings with his foot to the rock (cf. H. λεπάδες τὰ πρὸς ταῖς πέτραις κεκολλημένα κογχύλια); acc. to WP. 2, 429 and W.-Hofmann s. lepidus however of λέπος, λεπίς `shell, scale'.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: From λέπας: λεπαστή (- άστη) f. `limpet-like beaker' (com.) with λεπαστίς, - ίδος `id.' (vase-inscr., H.); on the formation Schwyzer 503; Lat. LW [loanword] lepista, - esta; λέπαστρον σκεῦός τι ἁλιευτικόν H. (cf. δέπαστρον a.o.; Chantraine Form. 333 f.); λεπαδεύομαι 'collect λ.' (H., Phot.). The similarity between λέπας and Lat. lapis, - idis m. (f.) `stone' shows a common origin (against this Ernout-Meillet s. v.); the Lat. a-vowel is explained as ablaut (s. W.-Hofmann s. v. [most improbable]), also as derailment (after capis `bowl with one handle' [idem]; Petersen Lang. 14, 49[?]). WP. 2, 431 considers (doubting) a loan from a mediterranean language; thus Hubschmid 3me Congrès int. de toponymie et d'anthroponymie II 189 (to Iberorom. lapa `flat stone, hollow' etc). Improbable Alessio Onomastica 2, 189; s. Belardi Doxa 3, 212. - The old connection with λέπω `peel off' ( λέπας `bare rock') is still (despite Bq) considered.Page in Frisk: 2,105Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λέπας

3 λοβός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `lobe, lap, slip' as appellation of several lap- or sliplike parts of body or plant, esp. `lobe of the ear' (Ξ 182), also `lobe of liver' (Hp., A., E., Pl.), `of the lung' (medic.) etc.; `lap, Blättchen des Fliederblattes' (Thphr.), `capsula with seeds, (hanging down) pods of siliquosae- and leguminous plants' ans these themselves, `pod, seed-lobe, fruit-lobe in gen.' (Thphr., Dsc., Gal.). Details in Strömberg Eranos 40, 90ff.; he wants to explain the meaning `pod, case' through popular association with λοπός `shell, bark, scale', which is superfluous with the development of meanings scetched above. Demin. λόβιον (Gal., Dsc.).Compounds: Often as 2. member, e.g. πρό-λοβος m. `crop of birds, Adam's apple' (Arist., LXX), but προ-λόβιον `the front part of the lobe of the ear' (Poll., H.); ἔλ-λοβος `in a pod, with pod' (Thphr.; lengthened ἐλλοβ-ώδης `id.'; cf. Strömberg Theophrastea 164), but ἐλ-λόβιον `ear-ring' (Luc., S.E.); ἀντι-λόβιον, - βίς `part of the ear-lobe opposite to the προλόβιον' (medic.); ἐπιλοβίς μέρος τοῦ ἥπατος H.; as adj. in ἡ ἐπιλοβὶς γλῶσσα `lobe of the liver' (of soothsayers, PAmh. 2, 14, 21; III--IVp); as building term καταλοβεύς m. `uppercornice, cross-beam' (Epid., Hierapytna); ὀξυλοβ-έω ' τὸ ταχέως ἀκούω' (Suid.), from *ὀξύ-λοβος, s. Strömberg l.c.Derivatives: Dimin. λόβιον (Gal, Dsc.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Etymology unknown. Semantically attractive is the connection with NHG Lappen a. cognates., e.g. OE læppa m. `tip, lap', ēar-læppa `ear-lobe', also without expressive gemination as WNo. lapa `hang slack', MLG ōr-lepel `ear-lobe'. Further with deviating ă-vowel Lat. lăbāre `totter, give way' beside long vowel in lābor, lābī `glide'; with initial sl- e.g. MLG slap 'sleck', Lith. slãbnas, OCS slabъ `slack'; extensively on these WP. 2, 431 f., W.- Hofmann s. labō; also Pok. 655 f.; Fraenkel Wb. s. slãbnas, Vasmer Wb. s. slábyj. The IE b may, like the varying vocalisation, be connected with the popular-expressive character of these words. - Connection with Lat. legūmen `leguminous plant etc.' (Fick, Prellwitz) would presuppose IE * legʷ-, which would be more attractive; the Lat. word, however, has also been interpreted differently, s. W.-Hofmann s. v. - Beside λοβός there seems to have been a form *λέβος, s. 1. λεβηρίς (?). If this is correct - but it is rather unreliable - the word may be Pre-Greek; the cited IE forms rather point to a European substratum word.Page in Frisk: 2,131-132Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λοβός
