4 -let's / let us-
Nota d'usoLa forma più comune dell'imperativo di prima persona plurale con let è let's; la forma non contratta, let us, è formale: Let's stop here!, fermiamoci qui!; Let us submit to God's will, affidiamoci alla volontà di Dio! La forma let us può anche significare lasciaci o lasciateci, cioè essere un normale imperativo di seconda persona singolare o plurale: Please, let us do our job, per favore, lasciateci fare il nostro lavoro!La question tag dell'imperativo introdotto da let's è shall we?: Let's try, shall we?, dài, proviamo!; «Let's go dancing, shall we?» «Yes, let's», «dài, andiamo a ballare!» «va bene, (andiamo)».Le forme negative dell'imperativo introdotto da let's sono let's not e, nella lingua formale, let us not; specialmente nell'inglese britannico, sono diffuse anche le forme don't let's e, nel registro formale, do not let us: Let's not give in, non cediamo!; non diamoci per vinti!; Do not let us be disheartened by this defeat, non scoraggiamoci per questa sconfitta! -
5 -used to-
Nota d'uso1 used to + infinito indica un'azione che avveniva abitualmente in passato o uno stato di cose passato; il tempo corrispondente italiano è l'imperfetto: When I was a child my family used to spend the summer holidays in Brighton, quando ero piccolo la mia famiglia trascorreva (o era solita trascorrere, soleva trascorrere) le vacanze estive a Brighton; She used to be very pretty, una volta era molto carina; There used to be only fields here, un tempo qui c'era solo campagna; We still meet on Saturdays, but not as often as we used to, ci vediamo ancora il sabato, ma non spesso come una volta.used to possiede diverse forme negative. Le due più comuni sono didn't use to ( She didn't use to do the housework, una volta non faceva i lavori di casa) e used not to ( I used not to listen to the radio, but now I do, una volta non ascoltavo la radio, ma adesso sì): la prima è più colloquiale, la seconda – propria di un verbo modale – è più formale ed è diffusa soprattutto in GB. Altre alternative sono la forma contratta usedn't to ( They usedn't to ask my opinion, di solito non chiedevano la mia opinione) e used to not ( They used to not ask my opinion), entrambe piuttosto formali e didn't used to, più colloquiale e da alcuni ritenuta scorretta ( They didn't used to ask my opinion).Analogamente, esistono varie forme interrogative. La più normale è quella con l'ausiliare do e il verbo all'infinito: Did you use to play basketball at college?, giocavi a basket all'università? È possibile anche la forma con do e used, nonostante non tutti la considerino accettabile: Did you used to play basketball at college? Antiquata ed essenzialmente limitata all'inglese britannico è la costruzione modale, che consiste nell'anteporre used al soggetto: Used you to go to church on Sundays?, la domenica andavi a messa?2 to be used to significa essere abituato (o avvezzo) a; quando è seguito da un verbo, questo ha la forma in - ing: She is [was] used to his vagaries, è [era] abituata alle sue stravaganze; I'm used to working on holidays and weekends, sono abituato a lavorare durante le vacanze e nei fine settimana; I'm not used to it, non ci sono abituato. to get used to + - ing significa abituarsi: I will never get used to eating this stuff, non mi abituerò mai a mangiare questa roba.Si noti la differenza tra I used to read a lot e I'm used to reading a lot: la prima frase significa che un tempo leggevo molto e ora non lo faccio più, mentre la seconda vuole dire che sono abituato a leggere molto. -
6 ♦ could
♦ could /kʊd, kəd/v. modalecould, come tutti i verbi modali, ha caratteristiche particolari:● ha significato di passato o di condizionale;● non ha forme flesse (-s alla 3a pers. sing. pres., - ing, -ed), non è mai usato con ausiliari; in sostituzione delle forme mancanti si usano, secondo il significato, quelle di to be able o di to be possible;● forma le domande mediante la semplice posposizione del soggetto;● l'infinito che segue non ha la particella to;● viene usato nelle question tags1 ( esprime capacità o abilità) – At 12 he still could not read properly, a dodici anni non sapeva ancora (o non era ancora in grado di) leggere bene; He could be very unpleasant when he wanted, sapeva (o poteva) essere molto sgradevole quando voleva; I could not resist intervening, non seppi resistere all'impulso di intervenire; The doctors could not save him, i medici non hanno potuto (o non sono riusciti a) salvarlo; I'm sorry I couldn't come earlier, mi dispiace di non esser potuta venire prima; How could you do such a thing?, come hai potuto fare una cosa simile?; We decided we could afford a bigger house, decidemmo che potevamo permetterci una casa più grande; We could hear firing in the distance, sentivamo spari in lontananza; I could feel my heart thumping, mi sentivo martellare il cuore; I turned my back to him so that he couldn't see me smiling, mi girai perché non mi vedesse sorridere2 ( nel discorso indiretto) – She said she could come after lunch, (rif. al futuro) ha detto che può (o potrà) venire dopo pranzo; (rif. al passato) disse che avrebbe potuto (o poteva) venire dopo pranzo3 ( esprime capacità ipotetica) – I could recognize that man if I saw him again, saprei riconoscere quell'uomo, se lo rivedessi; I'm so furious I could scream!, sono così furioso che mi metterei a urlare!4 ( esprime possibilità o probabilità rif. al futuro o, seguito da inf. pass., al passato) – I could be wrong, but…, potrei sbagliarmi, ma…; This could well turn out to be an advantage, questo potrebbe anche rivelarsi un vantaggio; Repairs could take two months, le riparazioni potrebbero richiedere due mesi; These mushrooms could be poisonous, questi funghi potrebbero essere velenosi; He said the damage could have been caused by a subsidence, ha detto che il danno potrebbe essere stato causato da un cedimento del terreno; The weather couldn't have been lovelier, il tempo non avrebbe potuto (o non poteva) essere migliore; He couldn't possibily have said that, non può assolutamente aver detto questo; è impossibile che abbia detto questo; She couldn't have been more than twenty, non poteva avere più di vent'anni5 ( esprime suggerimento o richiesta) – I could try again tomorrow, potrei riprovare domani; Could you go there yourself?, potresti andarci tu?; Could I have a word with you?, potrei parlarti un momento?; Couldn't we wait a bit longer?, non potremmo aspettare ancora un po?; If I could just ask a brief question…, vorrei solo fare una rapida domanda se posso6 ( seguito da inf. pass., esprime rammarico o rimprovero per qc. di non avvenuto) – Things could have been different, le cose sarebbero potute andare altrimenti; You could have hurt yourself, avresti potuto farti male; She could have told me!, avrebbe potuto dirmelo!; I could have been here by ten, if I hadn't had a puncture, sarei potuta arrivare per le dieci se non avessi forato; You couldn't have been more cruel, non saresti potuto essere più crudele7 ( in frase ipotetica, dopo if) – I would help you, if I could, ti aiuterei, se potessi; If only Dad could see me now!, se Papà mi potesse vedere ora!● could but ► but (1), B, def. 3 □ could not help ► to help □ as soon as I could, non appena potei (o mi fu possibile); più presto che potei □ as tight as could be, strettissimo □ as easy as could be wished, facile come di più non si potrebbe (o, in contesto pass., non si sarebbe potuto) desiderare.NOTA D'USO: - could have- -

13 --ed o -t?-
Nota d'usoIl past simple e il participio passato dei verbi to burn, to dream, to dwell, to kneel, to lean, to leap, to learn, to smell, to spell, to spill e to spoil possono finire in –ed o –t e sono corrette entrambe le forme, burned o burnt, dreamed o dreamt, dwelled o dwelt, ecc. Generalmente la forma –ed è preferita nell'inglese americano, mentre la forma –t è leggermente più frequente nell'inglese britannico. -
14 -can o to be able to?-
Nota d'usoQuando si parla di abilità al presente l'uso di can o to be able to è indifferente dal punto di vista grammaticale. Tuttavia, normalmente si tende ad usare can: Can you drive?, sai guidare? a meno che non ci siano delle condizioni per cui ci siano dubbi sulle capacità di una persona in un particolare momento. Se la persona a cui ci si rivolge non si sente bene, ad esempio, si preferisce usare to be able to: Are you able to drive?, sei in grado di guidare? Al passato semplice, le due forme possibili sono could e was/were able to. Se si vuole sottolineare un'abilità in generale, non c'è differenza d'uso: I could (o was able to) swim when I was five, sapevo nuotare a cinque anni. Se invece si pone l'enfasi su un risultato da ottenere, si deve utilizzare was/were able to o, in alternativa, il verbo to manage: Were you able to (o Did you manage to) get a newspaper?, sei riuscito a prendere un giornale? (non Could you get a newspaper? che sarebbe inteso come una richiesta: prenderesti un giornale?). Al futuro e nei tempi composti è possibile utilizzare solo la locuzione to be able to: I haven't been able to finish the report, non sono riuscito a finire la relazione; I'll be able to finish by Friday, riuscirò a finire entro giovedì. -
15 -centre on o centre round?-
Nota d'usoAlcuni ritengono che to centre around (o to centre round o to centre about) siano forme non corrette e preferiscono to centre on: A new development centred on the motorway section is planned, si pianifica un nuovo sviluppo imperniato sul tratto autostradale. -
16 -continual o continuous?-
L'aggettivo continual significa “continuo” come “ripetuto, frequente”, cioè si riferisce ad azioni che vengono ripetute: I am tired of these continual interruptions, sono stanco di queste continue interruzioni; She is continually asking me for money, mi chiede continuamente del denaro. L'aggettivo continuous invece si riferisce a qualcosa di “continuo” nel senso di “incessante, ininterrotto”: The canals join to form one continuous waterway, i canali si uniscono a formare una via di navigazione ininterrotta; He ran continuously for half an hour, corse per mezzora di seguito. -
17 -further o farther?-
Nota d'usoSia further che farther sono forme comparative di far e come aggettivo o avverbio in riferimento alle distanze fisiche si possono usare entrambi, nonostante further sia più comune nell'inglese britannico: There is another garage a mile or two further on, c'è un altro garage uno o due miglia più avanti; Aberdeen is farther north than Dundee, Aberdeen è più a nord di Dundee. In contesti figurati o astratti, però, si può utilizzare solo further, per esempio quando, come aggettivo, si intende “aggiuntivo, ulteriore”: further information, ulteriori informazioni, further details, ulteriori dettagli, further education, istruzione postscolastica; o come avverbio nel senso di “inoltre”: Further, the report describes the need for improved safety precautions, inoltre il report parla della necessità di migliori precauzione sanitarie; o quando si tratta del verbo to further, che significa “promuovere, potenziare”: to further children's welfare, potenziare i servizi sociali per i bambini. -
18 -morire-
Nota d'usoIn frasi come X è morto si traduce con dead solo quando morto non indica un'azione ma uno stato; altrimenti si usano le normali forme del verbo to die. Suo marito è morto (= non è più vivo), her husband is dead; ma: Suo marito è morto l'anno scorso in un incidente stradale, her husband died in a car accident last year (non her husband is dead in a car accident last year); La nonna è morta nel sonno stamattina, granny died in her sleep this morning (non granny is dead in her sleep this morning). -
19 -nascere-
Nota d'usoSono nato, egli è nato, ecc., corrispondono in inglese a I was born, he was born, ecc., e non a I am born, he is born, ecc. La differenza fra le due forme è solo apparente, in quanto entrambe sono dei passati: la forma italiana del verbo intransitivo nascere, quella inglese del verbo passivo to be born, essere partorito (da to bear, partorire). Quindi: Sono nato in Spagna nel 1991, I was born in Spain in 1991 (non I am born in Spain in 1991); Quando sei nato?, when were you born? (non when are you born?). To be born si coniuga al presente anziché al passato soltanto quando traduce effettivamente il presente italiano: Tutti gli uomini nascono liberi ed eguali, all men are born free and equal; Questo disturbo può presentarsi in bambini che nascono da madri alcolizzate, this disorder may occur in children who are born to alcoholic mothers. -
20 -there isn't o isn't here?-
Sarebbe del tutto errato tradurre letteralmente: Mr Jones there isn't.
