2 κέσκεον
Grammatical information: n.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Popular reduplicated formation (cf. Schwyzer 423) \< *κέσ-κεσ-ο-ν to a verb for `comb, hackel, scratch' in OCS češǫ (yot-present), česati, perh also in Hitt. kišāi-, IE. * kes-, with the verbal nouns Czech. pa-čes `tow', Lith. kasà `plait, braid' (IE. * kos-ā), MIr. cīr f. (* kēs-rā), perh. also Hitt. kišri- name of something of wool; other forms Pok. 585, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. česátь, W.-Hofmann s. carrō. - A lengthening is ξέω; s. also ξαίνω, ξύω. --A reduplicated *κεσ-κεσ- is an improbable IE structure; I think that - εον derives from Pre-Greek -ay-on (Beekes, Pre-Greek Suffixes sub - αι-\/ ε(ι)-) ωηιχη γανε -ε(ι)ον. So the word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,834Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κέσκεον

3 ξέω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `shave, carve, smooth, polish'.Other forms: Aor. ξέσ(σ)αι (Il.), pass. ξεσθῆναι, perf. midd. ἔξεσμαι (IA.), fut. ξέσω (Paul. Aeg.), perf. act. ἔξεκα (Choerob.), Vbaladj. ξεστός (Il.; Ammann Μνήμης χάριν 1, 16).Derivatives: 1. ξέσις ( ἀπό-) f. `smoothing, carving' (Thphr., Delph. IVa); 2. ξέσματα pl. `carving, chips, carved objects' (M. Ant., AP); 3. ξεσμοῖς dat. pl. H. as explanation of σπαράγμασι. 4. ξόανον n. `(carved) image og (a) god' (S., E., X.), name of a (carved?) musical instrument (S. Fr. 238); ξοάνων προθύρων ἐξεσμένων H.; formation like ὄχανον (: ἔχω), πλόκανον (: πλέκω) a.o. (Chantraine 198; not with Bq, WP. 1, 450 a.o. from ξύω; nor with Latte Glotta 32, 35 f. subst. adj.); dimin. ξοάνιον (Anaphe IIa). 5. ξοΐς, - ίδος f. `chisel' (hell. inscr.) with ξοΐδιον (pap. IIIp) and ξοΐτης m. name of a profession (Isauria; Redard 36); prob. directly from ξέω after κοπίς, δορίς a.o. (cf. Chantraine 338); ξοός ξυσμός, ὁλκός H. 6. Of the prefixed forms: διαξόος m. `sculptor' (Delph. 341a), ἀμφί-ξοος (- ους) `smoothing round about' (AP); ἐπι-, κατα-, παρα-ξοή, -ά `carving, smoothing etc.' (inscr.). -- On itself stand with lengthened grade ξώστρα ψηκτρίς, ψήκτρια H. (acc. to WP. 1, 450 a.o. rather to ξύω).Origin: ??Etymology: With ξύω (and ξαίνω?) cognate (s. vv.); without close agreement outside Greek. The stem ξεσ-, reconstructed from ξεσ-τός, ξέσ-(σ)αι a.o., which is at the basis of all forms cited above, is after traditional interpretation to be analysed as ξ-εσ-(= ks-es-) and to be interpreted as zero grade with εσ-enlargement (cf. on τρέω) of the IE root * kes- in OCS čes-ati `comb' a.o. (s. κέσ-κεον) `scratch, comb' (e.g. Brugmann Grundr.2 II: 3, 343 with Persson Stud. 88); connection with κεάζω a. cogn. (s. v.) can as well be considered. -- Diff. suggestion in Schwyzer 269 and 329: ξέω metathesized from * kes-ō (= OCS čes-)? Mann Lang. 28,40 compares Alb. shesh `raze, level', supposedly from *ksesi̯ō. Zie by keskeon!!! 4 ἐπίξηνον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `chopping-block, hangmans-block' (A., Ar., Eust., H.).Other forms: -Derivatives: Cf. ξηνός = `κορμός, trunk' (Suid.)Etymology: From ξέω `hew, smooth'; ἐπίξηνον rather after ἐπικόπανον `chopping-block' (hellen.) than from ἐπι-ξέω. - From ξαίνω, cf. Ed. Fraenkel ad A. Ag. 1277.Page in Frisk: 1,538Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἐπίξηνον

5 κεάζω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `split, pound, rub to pieces' (Il.).Derivatives: εὑκέα-τος `easy to split' (ε 60, Theoc. 25, 248), κέαρνα σίδηρα τεκτονικά [`carpenter's axe'] (after σκέπαρνον); uncertain Κεάδαο gen. (Β 847).Etymology: The disyll. aorist κεά-σ(σ)αι (with facultative analogical - σσ-) as in ἐλά-σ(σ)αι, πετά-σ(σ)αι etc.; the other forms are new, κεάζω. Another presentformation perhaps in κείων (ξ 425, verse end), if with Schulze Q. 434 for κεῶν from *κεάων (after Persson Studien 134 a. o. however from *κεϜι̯ω to NHG hauen etc.; not preferable). After Palmer Interpretation 186-8 also Myc. ke-ke-me-na ( ko-to-na) here as `divided' (?; cf. also on κεῖμαι); but see Ruijgh Études $ 327f. - With κεα-, if \< *κεσα-, agrees Skt. fut. śasi-ṣyati `he will cut'; this form however is doubtful, as Skt. śas-(a)ti `cut' has normally monosyll. śas-. From Gr. κεσ- with certain and Skt. śas- with possible IE. e (*ḱes-) differs Lat. castrō, - āre `cut' through the unexplained a (reduced vowel?). On other, quite hypothetical nominal formations (best Russ. etc. kosá f. `sickle'; with k- for s- through dissimilation?) s. Pok. 586, W.-Hofmann s. castrō, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. kosá.Page in Frisk: 1,806Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κεάζω

6 κήρυξ
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `herald, messenger'; also `trumpet-shell` (Il.).Dialectal forms: Myc. karuke \/kārūkes\/.Compounds: As 2. member e. g. in δρομο-κήρυξ `courier' (Aeschin.).Derivatives: 1. Feminine: κηρύκαινα `heraldess' (Ar. Ek. 713; moment. formation, cf. Chantraine Formation 108); 2. Patronymic: Κηρυκίδαι m. `descendants of the Athenian family of the Κήρυκες' (Poll.). 3. Adjectives: κηρύκειος `belonging to the herald' (S.), mostly ntr. κηρύκ(ε)ιον, Dor. κᾱρ-, Ion. κηρυκήϊον `herald's wand' (IA. Dor.; Lat. LW [loanword] cādūceum, - eus; cf. W.-Hofmann s. v.), also as constellation (Scherer Gestirnnamen 200); `auctioneer's fee, tax on auction sales' (hell. inscr. a. pap.); ΚαρυκήϜιος Boeot. name of Apollon (Tanagra, Thebes, VIa; Schwyzer 468); κηρυκικός `regarding the herald, town crier' (Pl.; Chantraine Étud. sur le vocab. gr. 135f.), - ινος `belonging to the herald' (pap., Suid.), - ώδης `like the trumpetshell' (Arist.). - Denomin. verbs: 1. κηρύσσω, - ύττω, κᾱρ- `be herald, broadcast, announce' (Il.) with κήρυγμα `herald's cry, announcement' (IA.), κηρυγμός (sch.), κήρυξις (D. C.) `id.'; 2. κηρυκεύω `function as herald, announce' (Att.) with κηρυκεία, - ηΐη `herald's service' (IA.), κηρύκευμα `announcement' (A. Th. 651), - ευσις `id.' (Suid.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Generally compared with Skt. kārú- `singer, poet'. Beekes, Languages in Prehist. Europe, 2003, 109-116 showed that Greek does not have a `enlargement' κ (as per Schwyzer 496; his examples are few and doubtful); then, in this way we could not explain the long υ; words with -ῡκ- all have very different meanings and are probably un-IE. Therefore the word is most probably Pre-Greek. - Unexplained was the gloss κορύγης κῆρυξ. Δωριεῖς H. As Pre-Greek only had the vowels α (ι, υ), it will have had *καρυγ- with α \> ο before following υ (note that this α will have been short), so it will be a variant of the same word.Page in Frisk: 1,845Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κήρυξ
