Schieber sind i. d. R. Einrichtungen, die Rohrleitungen nicht nur versperren, sondern auch die Durchflussmenge regulieren können. Bei einem Kegelstrahlschieber trifft der Wasserstrom auf einen zentrisch im Rohr angeordneten Prallkegel. Ein um das Rohr angeordneter Zylinder kann dabei so in Richtung des Kegels verschoben werden, dass die seitliche öffnung auf Höhe des Kegels teilweise oder ganz geschlossen wird. Kugelschieber sind in einer Kugelkalotte drehbar gelagerte Rohrstücke. Zum Absperren werden sie um 90° gedreht. Bei Zweiwegkugelschiebern kann durch die Drehung alternativ zwischen zwei Rohrleitungen gewählt werden (kein Absperrorgan). Bei einem Ringschieber wird ein in einer Verbreiterung des Rohres angebrachter Stopfen in Fließrichtung verschoben, wodurch sich der Durchflussquerschnitt verkleinert. Streckenschieber sind bei längeren Rohrleitungen regelmäßig angeordnete Verschlussorgane. Sie können einzelne Rohrleitungsabschnitte absperren, so dass bei Revisionsarbeiten oder bei Rohrbrüchen nicht die gesamte Leitung entleert werden muss.
