2 dictate
v 1. диктовать: to dictate smth to smb — диктовать что-либо кому-либо; 2. диктовать, приказывать: to dictate to smb (1). Глагол to dictate 1. в форме герундия ( dictating) может соответствовать русскому существительному диктовка, которое имеет в свою очередь два значения — процесс диктовки и диктант (диктуемый текст). Русское диктовка в первом значении соответствует герундию dictating, а во втором — существительному dictation:Her indistinct manner of dictating was very irritating — Ее манера невнятно диктовать очень раздражала.
The dictation was pretty difficult — Диктант был довольно трудным.
(2). Глагол to dictate 2., в отличие от dictate 1., употребляется в конструкции to dictate to smb и имеет смысловой оттенок уничижительности, неодобрения:He likes dictating to people — Ему нравится всем диктовать/всеми командовать.
