Кај програмите за обработка на податоци, тоа е фајл што содржи податоци (наречени поинтери) за физичкиот распоред на записите во базата на податоци. Кога пребаруваме или сортираме, програмот го користи индексот наместо целата база на податоци со што операциите драстично се забрзуваат. Кај програмите за обработка на текст и персонално издателство, индекс претставува азбучен список приклучен како додаток на книга со важни зборови, имиња и сл., што се јавуваат во интегралниот текст.
