Acommon forage in the Southwest, also known as pin grass ( Erodium cicu-tarium). According to Cobos, alfilería (also alfilerillo) is used in New Mexican and Southern Colorado Spanish to denote a plant of the Cranesbill family called pinclover. He indicates that the term derives from alfilerillo, which the DRAE defines as an herbaceous plant used as forage in Argentina and Chile. It is likely that the Argentine and Chilean varieties are unrelated to the southwestern alfilaria or alfile-ria, but share the common characteristic of a pinlike shape. No doubt the cowboy distinguished among the various types of forage that cattle would eat, since there was always the danger that they might ingest locoweed or some other poisonous plant.Alternate forms: alfilena, alfileria, alfilerilla, filaree, fileree. -

(Sp. model spelled same [koxiníjo], probably < Italian cuscino 'cushion, pillow' plus the Spanish dimunitive suffix -illo)Blevins notes that this term refers to a pocket on a saddle or a small box or case fastened to a saddle. Used to carry small objects, including bottles of liquor. Santamaría indicates that in Mexico it can also refer to one of two pockets or wicker baskets that hang from the head of the saddle. They are used to carry letters, lightweight goods, provisions, and other items. Santamaría notes that the term is generally used in the plural. Islas glosses cojinillo as each of the two detachable round leather bags that hang from the front part of the saddle and are used in a similar fashion. See also cantina.

A mountain range; especially the Rocky Mountains of the western United States and Canada. Clark notes that there is an adjective form, cordilleran, and Hendrickson indicates that the term is frequently seen in the plural, cordilleras. According to the DARE, "an evergreen shrub or tree ( Sophora secundiflora)."Alternate forms: frigolito, frijolilla, frijolito, frijollito.Also called big-drunk bean, coral bean, mescal bean, mountain laurel, whiskey bean.2) DARE: 1947. A locoweed (including Oxytropis lambertii). See locoweed. Santamaría references many plants by this name, including various leguminous plants native to Mexico. One of these is the S. secundiflora, a northern variety of colorín known as the frijolito in Texas. The seeds of this plant contain a pungent, highly poisonous alkaloid that Indians ingest in small doses to induce intoxication, delirium, and finally, a deep sleep that lasts for several days. It is probably because of its narcotic properties that the plant is known in the Southwest as the whiskey bean or big-drunk bean. Cobos references frijolillo simply as another name for locoweed. -

Referenced in the DARE as "a milk vetch," including the Astragalus mollissimus and the A. wootonii. Santamaría glosses it as a bush ( Brongniartia parryi) that grows on the Mexican altiplano. In Baja California, the name garbancillo de buey is given to the A. leucopis. Cobos references garbancillo as locoweed.Alternate form: garbanzilla. -

The DRAE and Coraminas define the term as hair or coat the color of the thrush's plumage as applied to horses and mules. The Royal Academy also notes the color derives from a mixture of black and white hairs. Santamaría references seven types of tordillo and Islas adds another as horse coloring in Mexico. -

(zorrillo [soríjo], of uncertain origin; probably from Spanish zorro 'fox' and -illo, a diminutive suffix)According to Santamaría, a zorrillo is a skunk. In the Southwest the term was applied to longhorn cattle whose hides have dorsal stripes. Watts indicates they often had white spots on their flanks and bellies, which made them similar in appearance to the above-mentioned animal.
