В конце XIX в. в Америке blacked-up minstrels (белокожие исполнители негритянских мелодий и песен, загримированные неграми), использовали свиной жир, чтобы удалить с лица обильно наложенный грим. Таких исполнителей стали называть hamfat actors («актёры свиного жира»), позже сокращённого до hams. Радиолюбителей также называют hams.
