1 guaraní
adj.Guarani.f. & m.Guarani, member of the Guarani Indians of Paraguay.* * *1.ADJ SMF Guarani2.SM (Ling) GuaraniGUARANÍ Guaraní is an American Indian language of the tupí-guaraní family and is widely spoken in Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. In Paraguay it is the majority language and has equal official status with Spanish, which is spoken mainly by non-Indians. In parts of southern Brazil, tupí-guaraní is the basis for a pidgin known as Língua Geral, now losing ground to Portuguese. From guaraní and its sister dialect tupí come words like "jaguar", "tapir", "toucan" and "tapioca".* * *Iadjetivo/masculino, femenino GuaraniII •• Cultural note:The name of a people who lived between the rivers Amazon and Plate, and their language. Guaraní was the language spoken by the main indigenous people at the time of the Spanish conquest. The process of racial mixing between Spaniard and Guarani over centuries has resulted in a population that is largely bilingual. In the major urban areas about half the population are able to use both languages freely, while in rural areas Guarani speakers predominate. Spanish is the language of the press and education, but Guarani has had a great influence on the vocabulary of Spanish speakers, and this has given rise to a so-called “guarañol”, a hybrid of both languages.* * *m FIN guaraní* * *guaraní adj & nmf: Guaraniguaraní nm: Guarani (language of Paraguay) -

It is a tea made from the dried leaves of the “yerba maté” plant. Most typically, it is made in, and then drunk from, a receptacle made from the husk of a small gourd, itself called a maté. These can also be made of other materials such as wood, china or bone. The maté is drunk through a type of metal straw with a perforated bulbous end called a “bombilla”. Maté is a stimulant, contains various nutrients, and is held to be good for the digestion. It was drunk by the Guarani Indians long before the Spanish conquest. The conquistadors took to the habit, and also developed it as a commercial crop. Drinking maté is an everyday habit today for the majority of people from all social classes in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, and it is felt by many to be an essential part of being from the River Plate region.* * *I adj mattII m1 en ajedrez mate2 L.Am. The communities had their own militias and cavalry for self-defence, and Spanish settlers were forbidden access. The Jesuits allowed for the Indians' religious practices and beliefs in their teaching of Christianity, and the missions gave them protection from the slavery practised outside. It was, however, their very success which led to their downfall, as they came to be regarded as a rival by the cities of Buenos Aires and Asunción. The missions were finally closed in 1767, leaving over 100,000 Indians to their fate. This Jesuit utopia in the jungle was undoubtedly a paternalistic affair, but it has acquired an almost mythical status with the passing years. A recent manifestation of this is the 1986 film “The Mission”.* * *f mission* * ** * *misión n mission -
