The primary sense ‘to stain’ (as of dye [Il. 4, 141]) prepares the way for the transf. sense of causing defilement through socially or cultically unacceptable behavior. It is well to keep in mind in connection with the use of this term and cognates that in the Gr-Rom. world harmonious relations with the transcendent realm were understood to be dependent on careful observance of certain moral and ritual proprieties. Individuals were subordinate to interests of the community and violations of standard moral and ceremonial expectations could jeopardize the delicate balance between an entire populace and its deities. ① to confine or restrict to a narrow space, crowd, cramp, confine, restrict (Diod S 20, 29, 7; Lucian, Nigr. 13, Tox. 29 al.; LXX) fig., pass. be confined, restricted (Herm. Wr. 2, 11; schol. on Eur., Med. 57 στενοχωρεῖσθαι τῷ κακῷ; Is 28:20; Jos., Bell. 4, 163) οὐ στενοχωρεῖσθε ἐν ἡμῖν, στενοχωρεῖσθε δὲ ἐν τοῖς σπλάγχνοις ὑμῶν you are not restricted in us (i.e. they are not boxed off in a narrow area of Paul’s affection; s. vs. 11), but rather in your own hearts 2 Cor 6:12.

② to be in a circumstance that seems to offer no way out, be distressed fig. ext. of 1, pass., as the higher degree beside θλίβεσθαι (Epict. 1, 25, 28) θλιβόμενοι ἀλλʼ οὐ στενοχωρούμενοι hard pressed, but not distressed/crushed 2 Cor 4:8. In act. sense, of the Holy Spirit, when anger moves into a person whom he indwells: στενοχωρεῖται he is distressed Hm 5, 1, 3.
