Приняв во внимание героическое поведение Сэма в других обстоятельствах, трибунал изменил меру наказания на обычный перевод в другую часть под командованием странного капитана Уэйко Граймза. Уэйко требует, чтобы подчиненные называли его по имени, и в расположении его части (скопление изношенных деревянных бараков) не наблюдается никаких внешних признаков привычной воинской дисциплины. Вилли Кроуфорд, его лучший и просто-напросто первый друг - тоже фермер, похожий на тех, с которыми Сэм так грубо обращался до войны. Сэм участвует во многих опасных заданиях. Он видит, как плачет Уэйко, когда его телохранитель погибает в бою. Сам Уэйко, несмотря на все предосторожности, погибает в нескольких метрах от штаба: его убивает японец, спрятавшийся в стволе дерева. Перед смертью Уэйко уже готовился покинуть расположение части: его отстранили от командования за причуды. Подразделение Сэма гибнет в горах. В живых остаются только Сэм и Вилли, но Вилли тяжело ранен. Сэм сбегает вниз по горе, чтобы найти помощь. Друзья лежат на соседних носилках в кабине вертолета, летящего на родину.

   ► Единственный военный фильм в карьере Ричарда Флайшера (не считая малозначительной картины Тора, тора, тора!, Tora, Tora, Tora, 1970). Флайшера интересует не столько зрелищное описание боев, сколько - и почти исключительно (пусть даже в ущерб коммерческому потенциалу фильма) - психология бойцов. В образах различных персонажей он исследует диапазон патологий, порожденных войной. В результате фильм без малейшего пафоса становится радикальной обличительной речью против войны. Он показывает просто-напросто, что человек не создан для войны: она порождает или усиливает его неврозы. «Герой» (чью роль играет Роберт Уэгнер) - нормальный человек, не трусливей и не смелее других нормальных людей, но война почти превращает его в невротика, страдающего от частых срывов. Лейтенант, теряющий самоконтроль и убивающий собственных людей, представляет собой следующую стадию патологии солдата, выбитого из колеи войной. Капитан Уэйко (выдающаяся актерская работа Бродерика Кроуфорда) относится к числу законченных психопатов, какие часто встречаются в картинах Флайшера; война дает им прекрасную возможность как следует раскрыть свою безумную природу. В отношении всех этих персонажей Флайшер сохраняет холодный взгляд клинициста, никого не осуждая и никому не вынося приговор. Тем не менее, фильм нельзя назвать полностью пессимистичным. Опережая время по своему психопатологическому содержанию, фильм также весьма удался в области формы; ловкая конструкция на основе лиричных аналитических флэшбеков; размашистый и классический режиссерский стиль, кроящий пространство широкими движениями камеры, которые становятся еще более эффективными, благодаря практичному и при этом вдохновенному использованию широкоэкранного формата.

The sea and the atmosphere are fluids in contact with one another, but in different energy states - the liquid and the gaseous. The free surface boundary between them inhibits, but by no means totally prevents, exchange of mass and energy between the two. Almost all interchanges across this boundary occur most effectively when turbulent conditions prevail. A roughened sea surface, large differences in properties between the water and the air, or an unstable air column that facilitates the transport of air volumes from sea surface to high in the atmosphere. Both heat and water (vapor) tend to migrate across the boundary in the direction from sea to air. Heat is exchanged by three processes: radiation, conduction, and evaporation.
