Недостаточность или отсутствие адекватных реакций женщины в процессе полового акта. Этот термин приобрел уничижительное значение, поэтому чаще говорят об аноргазмии или оргазмической дисфункции. Выраженность этого нарушения может быть весьма различной — от полного отсутствия эротических чувств до полного участия в половом акте и получения от него удовольствия за исключением достижения оргазма во время коитуса. Иногда отмечается неадекватное увлажнение влагалища; иногда непроизвольные сокращения, типичные для оргазма, не сопровождаются возбуждением и удовольствием. Для объяснения неспособности некоторых женщин достигать "вагинального" оргазма привлекаются такие факторы, как анатомические и гормональные дефекты, аберрации влечения и развития Я. Несмотря на то, что многие здоровые и счастливые женщины нередко страдают аноргазмией, а выраженный вагинальный оргазм наблюдается у женщин с явными невротическими и даже психотическими расстройствами, основным критерием сексуальной и психологической нормы остается все же способность получать наслаждение от вагинального оргазма. В настоящее время фригидность, наряду с другими поведенческими расстройствами, рассматривается в качестве множественно детерминированного феномена. На его формирование могут влиять также специфические конфликты. Особенности развития вносят свой вклад в репрезентацию различных частей гениталий и степени их катексиса, определяя тем самым, с чем будут связываться ощущения — с клитором или вагиной. Бессознательные фантазии могут мешать сознательному сексуальному удовольствию и вести к торможению. В этих фантазиях половой акт может приравниваться к исполнению эдиповых желаний, пенис ассоциироваться с кастрацией, а половой акт восприниматься как нападение огромного (родительского) фаллоса, способного нанести рану или изувечить. В агрессивных фантазиях влагалище может предстать в роли кастрирующего (или поглощающего) органа, пытающегося отобрать пенис.
