Lancé en novembre 2004, le navigateur Firefox fait suite au navigateur Mozilla, qui disposait d’une messagerie électronique intégrée. La Mozilla Foundation est créée en juillet 2003 dans l’optique du lancement simultané de Firefox et d’une messagerie électronique indépendante du navigateur (Thunderbird). En novembre 2004, suite au succès de sa version bêta (8 millions de téléchargements en un mois), Firefox débute son ascension mondiale face au tout puissant Internet Explorer de Microsoft, grâce à de nouvelles fonctionnalités, par exemple la navigation par onglets, le blocage des pop-ups et l’intégration d’outils de recherche. Et grâce à l’importance accordée à la sécurité, à l’heure où les failles d’Internet Explorer se multiplient. En 2005, Firefox représente 10% du marché des navigateurs. En 2006, on note l’ajout de commandes permettant de rendre le web plus accessible aux personnes à mobilité réduite ou souffrant de déficiences visuelles, par exemple des commandes permettant de se servir du clavier plutôt que de la souris ou des commandes permettant d’agrandir le texte des pages web. En mars 2007, Firefox représente 25% du marché des navigateurs en Europe. -

Lancé en 1998, Mozilla est d’abord un navigateur issu du code source de Netscape (le premier grand navigateur du marché), avec une messagerie électronique intégrée. En février 2005, Firefox représente 8% du marché des navigateurs, avec 25 millions de téléchargements. A la même date, la Mozilla Foundation signe un partenariat avec le moteur de recherche Google. En août 2005, du fait de l’augmentation sensible de ses revenus, la Mozilla Foundation crée une division commerciale dénommée Mozilla Corporation. L’existence d’une division commerciale ne modifie pas les conditions de licence des logiciels, dont les codes sont publiés sous licence ouverte.
