Développé par le National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) à l’Université d’Illinois (un Etat des Etats-Unis), et distribué gratuitement à partir de novembre 1993, Mosaic est le premier logiciel de navigation sur le web - le web étant lui-même conçu en 1989 et opérationnel en 1991 - et contribue grandement à son expansion rapide. Mosaic a pour but de permettre à l’usager de trouver ce qu’il cherche dans un réseau de plus en plus foisonnant. Début 1994, une partie de l’équipe de Mosaic crée la Netscape Communications Corporation et lance un nouveau navigateur sous le nom de Nescape Navigator. -
