[церк.] обряду (по смерти тело умершего мирянина омывается, тело монаха лишь отирается водой, а тело священника отирается губкой, пропитанной елеем; затем умерший одевается в чистые одежды, сообразные его званию или служению; священников одевают не только в их домашние одежды, но и во все их церк. облачения; на умершего мирянина большей частью надевается саван: архиерею и священнику на грудь полагается Евангелие и в руки даётся крест, диакону - кадило, мирянину - икона; при положении во гроб последний окропляется св. водой; гроб должен быть дощатый, а не выдолбленный из цельного дерева; во время отпевания на чело умершего полагается венчик - бумажная лента с литографированными священными изображениями и в руки его влагается разрешительная грамота; до отпевания, в продолжение нахождения умершего в доме, над мирянином читается Псалтирь, а над архиереем и священником - Евангелие; по внесении тела в храм гроб ставится головой к дверям, ногами к востоку; самый чин отпевания различен для мирян, монахов, священников, архиереев и младенцев; по отпевании гроб относится к могиле при пении "Святый Боже", в предшествии священника; при опущении тела в могилу поётся лития; гроб полагается лицом к востоку; по окончании литии священник крестообразно бросает на гроб лопаткой горсть земли, а тж. льёт часть елея и сыплет пепел от кадила) — Christian [church] burial
