В США помнят Фарребик. Продолжение значительно обогащает и дополняет ход мыслей 1-го фильма, и отныне обе картины становятся единым целым (уникальным по форме и жанру). Рукье весьма разумно избегает приемов «прямого кино». Он сохранил тот же подход к реальности крестьянской жизни, что и в Фарребике, и воссоздал, по собственным словам, «вымысел, столь близкий к реальности, что мог бы сойти за саму реальность». Актеры играют роли, очень близкие к их реальной жизни, и делают это так серьезно, старательно и изобретательно, что постепенно становятся крайне убедительны. Фильм следует 2 главным сюжетным линиям: описанию сегодняшней крестьянской жизни - это скорее фон - и хронике деловых хлопот вокруг продажи имения Бикефарр, крошечность которого не позволяет хозяину работать без убытков (поэтому он охотно готов переехать в Тулузу и стать садовником); и это уже происходит на уровне действия. Деловые хлопоты вокруг имения становятся важнейшей заботой мелких землевладельцев Авейрона и окрестностей. «Чтобы покупать современное оборудование, - объясняет Рукье, - надо производить самому. Чтобы производить, необходимо расти. Чтобы расти, надо брать в долг. Это кабала, как говорит Рауль, персонаж фильма, не желающий идти по этому пути». Тем не менее, Раулю удается продать Бикефарр по желанной цене (но не дороже) тому покупателю, которого он сам выбрал. Т. е. тому, кто, по его мнению, больше всех нуждается в Бикефарре, поскольку владеет самым маленьким участком земли: молодому хозяину Фарребика, платящему за покупку из сбережений парализованного отца, который поручает брату представлять его интересы.Картина современной крестьянской жизни во многих отношениях удручает.Город не переехал в деревню, как того желал один юморист, но на глазах у одного поколения каждая ферма превратилась в маленький завод, шумный и загрязняющий природу. Крестьяне, словно беспечные ученики волшебника, орудуют химическими ядами, смертельно опасными для всех видов насекомых, а иногда и для людей. Единство формы и методики в обоих фильмах со всей очевидностью демонстрирует полное исчезновение поэзии и определенной гармонии между человеком и средой. Поэзия и гармония были связаны с относительным одиночеством каждого человека, со сплоченностью людского коллектива (семьи, деревни), с естественной близостью крестьян к природе. В наши дни человек обладает всеми возможными средствами коммуникации, но коллектив разложился, рассыпался или же стал слишком хрупок. Чтобы все понять про природу, достаточно взглянуть на нашу землю с небес (шум, загрязнение, уродство). А в отношении к животным часто складывается впечатление, что мы возвращаемся к исходной точке Крови животных, Sang des betes, 1949, Жорж Франжю; как будто началась новая бойня, новое истребление невинных. И все же этими печальными размышлениями делится с нами художник, лишенный фанатизма: он взвешивает каждый кадр, стремится показать, что комфорт принес людям и что у них отнял, и делает это без всякого пессимизма - возможно, перед нами лишь неприятный этап в вечном процессе приспособления человека к среде. Этот процесс надолго переживет и автора, и его персонажей. В финале фильма имение Фарребик укреплено, перестроено и готово к новым метаморфозам. Возможности кинематографа, использованные в данном случае с мудростью, проницательностью и подлинным чувством, дают зрителю пищу для ума. Автор намеренно предоставляет зрителю свободу в мыслях и оценках и оставляет его в легкой растерянности посреди изменчивого и с трудом постижимого мира.
