105 Harris Tweed
A fabric defined for the purpose of the trade mark of the Harris Tweed Association as " tweed, hand-spun, hand-woven and dyed and finished by hand in the islands of Lewis, Harris, Uist, Barra, and their several purtenances, and all known as the Outer Hebrides." It is a loosely woven cloth from hill and mountain pure virgin wools. During finishing the cloths are dried in loft", heated with peat fires, which gives the peculiar odour noticed in the cloth. About 18 to 22 end and picks per inch and 120 yards per ounce warp and weft (see Harris Yarn). Also called Hebridean Cloth. The Board of Trade further provide that "Wherever the Harris Tweed trade mark is used there shall be added in legible characters the words ' Woven in Harris ' or ' Woven in Lewis ' or ' Woven in Uist ' or ' Woven in Barra,' as the case may be, and for the purpose of distinction there shall also be added the word "hand-spun" in the case of tweeds made entirely from hand-spun yam". -
106 Beaver (Castor)
An overcoating cloth with one face sheared, heavily milled and nap-raised finish. It has a soft handle, and made of fine-grade wool as an imitation of beaver's fur. Now used for making hats, uniforms, etc. Two warps and two wefts are used of good quality wool. The weave is the 4-end sateen, two face and one back picks. A cloth woven 100-in, would be finished to about 56-in. wide. The finishing process is a special one, and the fabric shrunk considerably during finishing in both width and length. Many imitations have a cotton warp and shoddy weft. -
107 Drills Florentine Or French Twill
A four-shaft weave from heavy yarns of good quality, warp faced, with a pronounced twill rib. Khaki drills are principally made with this weave. Typical cloths are 29-in. wide 88 ends and 44 picks per inch, 18's T., 16's W. 88 ends and 44 picks per inch, 12'sT., 12's W. 96 ends and 54 picks per inch, 14's T., 14's W. Government drills with this weave are made to a given weight per yard for 29-in. cloth (see Khaki). The flax drills used for riding breeches and suitings are woven in 2 & 1 twill, 3 & 1 twill, and 5-end satin weaves. Examples are: 76 ends and'60 picks per inch, 36's T., 40's W., all linen. 94 ends and 72 picks per inch, 25's T., 40's W., all linen.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Drills Florentine Or French Twill

108 Russell
A strong, worsted fabric, woven 27-in. in 5-end twill weave of two-fold warp and single weft and used for women's boots, shoes, petticoats and men's vests in the 16th century. It had a lustrous shiny face. In the 19th century the cloth was again being made and used for a dress material, and later on cords were added when the fabric became known as Russell Cord, and formerly as Brighton Nap. -
109 Voile Fabrics
Very light open plain weave dress fabrics. The best qualities of voile are made with fine, very hard twisted two-fold combed and gassed cotton yarns. Gassing is done to remove all projecting loose fibres and make the yarn surface as clear as possible. It is a distinctive feature of good voile fabrics that warp ends and weft picks should appear singly in the cloth, that is, with a tiny space between adjacent threads. They are woven one end in a dent. Plain voiles are produced white, piece-dyed in self colours, and printed in huge quantities mostly in dainty colourings and very attractive designs. Various fancy stripes and checks are made with voile ground texture. Standard makes of plain cotton voiles are as follows: -* Combed and gassed Sakel. 38 turns per inch ** Combed Sakel. 38 turns per inch *** Combed and gassed Sakel. 46 turns per inch.

110 Cotchett, Thomas
SUBJECT AREA: Textiles[br]fl. 1700s[br]English engineer who set up the first water-powered textile mill in Britain at Derby.[br]At the beginning of the eighteenth century, silk weaving was one of the most prosperous trades in Britain, but it depended upon raw silk worked up on hand twisting or throwing machines. In 1702 Thomas Cotchett set up a mill for twisting silk by water-power at the northern end of an island in the river Derwent at Derby; this would probably have been to produce organzine, the hard twisted thread used for the warp when weaving silk fabrics. Such mills had been established in Italy beginning with the earliest in Bologna in 1272, but it would appear that Cotchett used Dutch silk-throwing machinery that was driven by a water wheel that was 13½ ft (4.1 m) in diameter and built by the local engineer, George Sorocold. The enterprise soon failed, but it was quickly revived and extended by Thomas and John Lombe with machinery based on that being used successfully in Italy.[br]Further ReadingD.M.Smith, 1965, Industrial Archaeology of the East Midlands, Newton Abbot (provides an account of Cotchett's mill).W.H.Chaloner, 1963, "Sir Thomas Lombe (1685–1739) and the British silk industry", History Today (Nov.).R.L.Hills, 1970, Power in the Industrial Revolution, Manchester (a brief coverage of the development of early silk throwing mills).D.Kuhn, 1988, Science and Civilisation in China, Vol. V: Chemistry and ChemicalTechnology, Part 9, Textile Technology: spinning and reeling, Cambridge (covers the diffusion of the techniques of the mechanization of the silk-throwing industry from China to the West).RLH -
