42 Alhambra Quilts
The cheapest quilt made, and very popular. Made all cotton with bold designs. Jacquard machines are used. The width of the cloth varies from 100 to 108-in. and length about 84-in. Standard cloths are: - (1) 108-in. X 84-in., 56 / 2 reed, 2 / 26's figuring warp, 2 / 40's ground warp, 36 picks, 6's condenser weft. (2) 108-in. X 84-in., 56 / 2 reed, 2 / 16's figuring and 24's ground warps, 30 picks, 4's or 6's weft, 100 yards of cloth from 120 yards figure, 105 ground. The coloured figuring ends vary from 1 to 4 in a mail of the harness, with one ground end to each mail. Two beams arc used, one for the coloured warp drawn through the jacquard harness, the other for ground warp drawn through the healds. For Colonial use the following has become popular: - and 5's weft. -
43 Armure Wool Fabric
Made in wide widths for use as dresses, coats, etc., good quality yarns, 72-ends, 68 picks per inch. The warp is usually end and end mohair and worsted, two-fold yarns, such as 2 / 60's or 2 / 40's - The weft is single worsted 26's to 32's. Other qualities are made from one kind of warp, but in right and reverse twist, and up to about loo-ends per inch. Cotton weft is used in the cheapest cloths, about 48's yarn dyed black. The photograph shows a typical wool Armure fabric made in a fancy rep weave 84 X 68, 2 / 60's botany / 30's botany. A heavy cloth is also termed "Armure", used for drapery and curtains, woven with brocade figuring on the armure weave ground, and all-wool yarnsDictionary of the English textile terms > Armure Wool Fabric

44 Doups
Special healds used in the manufacture of gauze and leno fabrics. A doup consists of an ordinary heald termed the " front standard " and a half heald with only one stave termed the " doup heald." The half heald may be at the bottom or the top. In the case of the bottom doup, the twine of the doup heald passes over the eye of the front standard and returns through it. The crossing thread is drawn through the loop so formed, and also through an additional heald termed the back standard. To form the cross-shed the whole of the doup is raised, namely, the front standard and half heald. To form the open shed, i.e., when the crossing thread is on the other side of the standard end, the back standard is lifted, the front standard heald is left down, but the half heald is lifted to allow the warp thread to cross to the other side of the standard warp end (see gauze cloth and design). -
45 Lastings
A very stout twill cloth woven with hard-twisted yarns, generally cotton all through, although wool is sometimes used. It is used chiefly for boot and bag linings when of the twill weave. This style of cloth when figured is used for church furniture. When dyed and of plain weave it is shipped to parts of South America as " Las tings " usually with a stiff glaze finish, and used as trouserings by the natives. Made in various widths and qualities. A popular quality is 24-in., 64 ends and 60 picks per inch, 20's warp, 24's weft. A mixture cloth is made in the five-end satin weave, with 104 ends and 68 picks per inch, 2/50's worsted warp and 16's or 24's cotton weft. The term originally meant a woollen fabric made of combed wool, having two- or three-fold warp and single weft, made 18-in. wide and dyed black. -
46 Pique
Sometimes abbreviated to P.K. See full pique and half pique. A type of seaming for gloves. ———————— Dobby cloths composed of two warps and two wefts. The face warp is lightly weighted, and weaves plain with the face weft. The back warp is heavily weighted, and stitches through the plain face cloth, according to a prearranged design. At the stitching points the face cloth is pulled down, causing the face to form an embossed surface. The second weft is used as wadding to make the raised figuring more pronounced. The face warp and weft are usually finer than those used for stitching and wadding and in the proportion of 2: 1, such as 2 ends 32's face 1 end 24's back. A popular cloth is made 40-in., 40/45 yards, 100 face 32's super Egyptian, 50 back 2/60's super American, 120 face picks 42's super Egyptian, and 64 wadding picks 18's super American. The finer piques are rather expensive. -
47 Blotch Checks
A favourite and an old pattern, very popular among the better-class of West African natives for dress purposes. The design effect is obtained from a printed warp, and looks as if a large quantity of deep blue ink has been splashed on it in big blotches. The checking is 2 white, 2 blue, the warp also being 2 blue and 2 white. A good quality is 30-in., 20 yards, 9's blue, 40's white warp, 11's blue, 32's white wefts. Usually 2 green, 1 red heading each end. Finished stiff finish. Made in Radcliffe and Rochdale. -
48 Dungarees
Cotton cloths, four-end twill weave, warp face, made from dyed warp and weft of heavy counts. Some qualities have a white or grey stripe down each selvedge. Really a denim with coloured weft instead of grey, and a blue warp. Made about 32-in. wide, 80 ends and 64 picks per inch, 16's T., 18's W. (see also Blue Dungaree and Dowgaree) -
49 Lustre Cloths
These are unions of cotton and wool - usually cotton warp and Alpaca, mohair, or other lustre wool weft. Such fabrics as alpacas, Brilliantines, Glaces, Sicilians, etc., are lustres. A typical lustre cloth is made plain weave 50-in. wide, 40 ends and 48 picks per inch, 2/80's dyed cotton warp and 16's mohair weft. Reeded one end in a dent. The warp is dyed black. This cloth is a Sicilian. -
50 Polonaise Lining
Mixture lining cloths in the 5-end satin weave in many qualities such as 124 ends and 60 picks per inch, 100 denier silk warp, 120 denier rayon weft. Lower qualities are made in the 1 & 2 and 1 & 3 weft twill weaves with cotton warp and rayon weft, about 40-in., 100 ends and 100 picks per inch, 52's Egyptian warp, 150 to 170 denier rayon weft. The cloths are piece-dyed. -
51 Serge Canvas
A worsted dress fabric woven in hopsack weave with an end of plain weave separating each small hopsack. The design repeats on 6 ends and 4 picks. It is made about 42 ends and 26 picks per inch, 2 ends 2/16's worsted hopsack warp, 1 end 2/36's worsted plain warp, and 8's worsted weft. -
52 Gros De Hondres
A repp fabric for dress purposes reeded 2-ends and 1-end per dent alternately, usually the 2-ends are different in colour than the single ends. Thick and thin wefts are used. Woven with about 350-ends per inch of 16 denier silk organzine warp and cotton weft. In the example illustrated there are three single picks of 20's cotton forming the trough of the repp, while the bold rib is formed by floating the double ends of warp over two picks - weaving as one - of 6/20's cotton. The weft is hidden by the silk warp. -
53 Swiss Checks
Cotton cloth woven 33-in. wide, 68 ends and 62 picks per inch, 36's warp, 54's weft, from all grey yarns. Piece-bleached and dress finish. The warp is dented 2 ends in one dent, then one end in one dent three times. The weft plan is the same as the warp, giving a check effect. There are eight headings in a piece of 94 yards, each heading being 5 bar X 2 bar Turkey red yarn and 4 picks each. -
54 Twisting-In
Joining the threads of a new warp to those of a used warp by twisting together the beginning end of a new thread to that of an old thread. The joining is effected by simply rolling the two threads between a finger and thumb. 57 Hair Cloth
A heavy twilled cloth containing wool waste and some calf hair. A nap is raised by gigging. Used for carriage rugs. ———————— This fabric is woven from very strong three-fold cotton warp and horsehair weft. Other material, such as linen, has been used for the warp. Usually made with about 44 ends per inch, and 80 to 100 picks per inch. The weave is usually the 5-end satin. Horse hair is not dyed, and the hair used is generally black, and is cut from both the tails and manes. The lengths vary from 30-in. to 46-in., and a single hair forms one pick. A special loom is used, fitted with mechanism for picking up the hairs and drawing them one by one into the shed. The shuttle for doing this is equipped with a pair of nippers. There is a rough fringe of hair at each selvedge. The cloth is very stiff or wiry and is used for coat linings. Formerly the cloth was also used for upholstering chairs and couches, and some is used today for this purpose (see Cilicium). -
58 Serge
SARGE, SERGEA coarse, woollen cloth known as early as the 12th century, a finer quality being called " say." It was much used during the Middle Ages for all portions of attire by the poorer classes, and in the piece for the decoration of houses. ————————SERGE (U.S.A.)The specification issued by the U.S.A. Government is as follows: - Cotton and worsted serge for overcoat lining shall be of single or 2-ply cotton warp and single or 2-ply worsted filling, the wool to be not below 46's grade; the width shall be full 36-in. exclusive of the selvedge and shall weigh from 6-oz. to 7-oz. per linear yard; it shall be woven in regular serge weave and constructed so as to give a fabric with good body and twill line on the face and containing approximately equal quantities of worsted and cotton yarns throughout; to be navy-blue, fast to the light, with both sets of threads and to be put up into bookfold. ———————— This term was formerly applied in Yorkshire to rough handling coarse wool fabrics woven in a twill design. An old 6-end serge was a simple diagonal 3 up, 1 down, 1 up, 1 down. The term serge is now almost universally understood to mean the 2 & 2 twill, and sometimes the 3 & 3 and the 4 & 4 twills. In wool fabrics it is the practice to add to the name serge, the definition of botany to distinguish fine wool serges from cross-bred qualities. A typical botany worsted serge, 2 & 2 twill weave, 21-02. per yard, 56/58-in. is made with 2/20's worsted 64/70's quality, S twist, 46 ends and 46 picks per inch, 72-in. wide in loom, woven white arid piece-dyed. The cloth is clear finished so as to obtain a well-defined twill effect. A usual weight for ladies' costume serge is 12/13-oz. per yard. Serges are made in many qualities ranging from 12-oz. to 26-oz. per yard. Crossbred worsted yarns are used in making the rougher and stronger types, while woollen yarns are also used. A serge which is extensively used in uniforms for transport workers is made with two-fold cross-bred worsted yarn for warp and single Cheviot woollen yarn for weft. The cloth is woven white or grey and piece-dyed. -

A special heavy repp fabric also used for curtains, hangings, etc. Usually with three to four times more ends than picks, and both plain dyed, stripes and jacquard effects. Both sides of the cloth are alike. Two warps are used and a standard cloth is made 132 X 48, 2/60's and 2/20's warps, 16's or 2/40's weft. The 2/60's warp is mercerised yarn and denting is two ends 2/60's and one end 2/120's. The coarse warp is loosely weighted and the finer tightly weighted, the fabrics are rather expensive, but always hang well and wear well.
