Диплоидной является зигота, один набор хромосом в которой привнесен женской, а второй — мужской гаметой. В некоторых случаях образуется диплоидная нередуцированная гамета, когда вследствие аномалий мейоза не происходит редукции числа хромосом. Термин предложен Э.
