Un ordinateur est un appareil électronique destiné à traiter l’information, grâce à l’exécution de programmes préalablement enregistrés dans la mémoire de l’appareil. Le terme "ordinateur" est inventé en mars 1955 (il y a un peu plus de cinquante ans, donc) par Jacques Perret, professeur de philologie latine à La Sorbonne, à la demande d’IBM France qui s’apprêtait à commercialiser les premières machines électroniques destinées au traitement de l’information. Un micro-ordinateur est un ordinateur destiné à une utilisation personnelle ou une utilisation en petite entreprise. Il est appelé aussi ordinateur de bureau ou encore PC (personal computer). En 2006, les principaux constructeurs de PC (PC de bureau et PC portables) sont Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Acer et Toshiba. Sur l’internet, un ordinateur est identifié par une adresse IP (internet protocol), qui est un numéro d’identification propre à chaque ordinateur connecté. -

Le baladeur numérique destiné à la musique est d’abord appelé baladeur MP3, du nom du premier "grand" format musical. Ce baladeur permet de stocker et d’écouter des fichiers musicaux, souvent trouvés ou achetés en ligne. Le baladeur le plus connu est l’iPod, lancé fin 2001 par Apple, et qui connaît un succès fulgurant. Sa part de marché toutes versions confondues est de 82% en octobre 2004. A la même date, une soixantaine de modèles est disponible sur le marché, dont les modèles de Creative, iRiver, PalmOne, RCA (Thomson), Rio et Samsung. Arrivent ensuite d’autres modèles lancés par Dell, Mattel, Olympus, Sony, Toshiba, Virgin ou Microsoft. ( Macintosh)Créé en 1984 par la société Apple, le Mac (Macintosh) est le premier ordinateur personnel disposant d’une interface graphique intuitive facilement utilisable par le non spécialiste. Plusieurs des concepts mis en pratique dans le Mac sont développés dès les années 1970 dans le centre de recherche PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) de Xerox, notamment l’utilisation de la souris, le fait de pouvoir pointer et cliquer sur une partie du texte, ou alors cliquer sur ce texte et le déplacer, ou encore l’utilisation de fenêtres successives. Tous les éléments mis en oeuvre dans le premier Mac sont d’ailleurs repris ensuite par Microsoft lors du lancement de son système d’exploitation Windows. Le succès commercial du Mac est immédiat. Le Mac a son propre système d’exploitation, le Mac OS, devenu le Mac OS X. La gamme Mac (iMac, iBook, etc.) propose des ordinateurs personnels et portables configurés pour une utilisation facile par l’usager, y compris pour la connexion à l’internet. Leurs formes arrondies et leurs couleurs translucides tranchent agréablement avec celles des modèles vendus par IBM, Compaq, Dell et les autres. A cause de la souplesse qu’elle procure, cette gamme est particulièrement populaire auprès des designers graphiques, des artistes visuels, des éditeurs spécialisés et des linguistes utilisant plusieurs séries de caractères à la fois. -

Disque magnétique amovible de petit format, la disquette permet de stocker des données pour utilisation, conservation et transport de celles-ci. En 1976, les premiers lecteurs de disquettes lisent des disquettes souples de 5,25 pouces. En 1980, Sony lance la disquette de 3,5 pouces avec stockage de 1,44 Mo (mégaoctet). Dans les années 1980, la disquette devient le standard pour la conservation et l’échange des données. A l’époque, un programme tient sur une ou deux disquettes. Dans les années 1990, la disquette classique est progressivement remplacée par la disquette zip, d’une capacité de 100 Mo, soit l’équivalent de 70 disquettes classiques, avec lecteur externe correspondant. Un deuxième modèle de disquette zip peut stocker jusqu’à 250 Mo. En 2003, la disquette de 1,44 Mo est en passe de devenir obsolète, ce mode de stockage devenant totalement dépassé, vu la taille toujours croissante des fichiers et programmes. Cependant, alors que les lecteurs de disquettes ont disparu depuis plusieurs années des ordinateurs d’Apple, Hewlett-Packard les conserve.
