Одно и то же, одно и то же, и мне кажется, что это внимание знакомых, похвалы, восхищение - всё это обман, меня обманывают, как больного, и я иногда боюсь, что вот-вот подкрадутся ко мне сзади, схватят и повезут, как Поприщина, в сумасшедший дом. (А. Чехов, Чайка) — Trigorin. The same old thing, all the time. And I have the feeling that all this attention from others, all this praise and adulation, is nothing but deception. I'm being deceived, like a sick person, and I'm sometimes afraid that someone will steal up on me from behind and carry me off to an asylum, like Poprishchin.2) разг., неодобр. (невыносимый шум, суматоха, крайний беспорядок и т. п.) madhouse; bedlam; devil's (hell's) delight; a hell of a noise (mess, row)И вот он приходит на свой первый урок. В пятый класс. И там сразу же начинается сумасшедший дом. Пятиклассники эти... от смеха хватаются за животы, а девчонки, эдакие дуры, тоже фыркают в платочки да ещё подначивают ребят. (А. Рекемчук, Мальчики) — Well, so he turned up to take his first lesson. It was fifth-formers he found himself up against. He had a madhouse on his hands right from the start. Those fifth-formers... clutched their stomachs in helpless laughter and the girls, foolish creatures, started giggling away and, worse still, kept egging the boys on.

On the introduction of Christianity into Icel. A. D. 1000, it was resolved that, in regard to eating of horse-flesh and exposure of children, the old laws should remain in force, Íb. ch. 9; as Grimm remarks, the exposure must take place immediately after birth, before the child had tasted food of any kind whatever, and before it was besprinkled with water (ausa vatni) or shown to the father, who had to fix its name; exposure, after any of these acts, was murder, cp. the story of Liafburga told by Grimm R. A.); v. Also a Latin essay at the end of the Gunnl. S. (Ed. 1775). In mod. usage the strong bera—bar is also used in impersonal phrases, denoting to let a thing be seen, shew, but almost always with a negative preceding, e. g. ekki bar (ber) á því, it could ( can) not be seen; að á engu bæri, láta ekki á bera ( to keep tight), etc. All these phrases are no doubt alterations from the weak verb bera, að, nudare, and never occur in old writers; we have not met with any instance previous to the Reformation; the use is certainly of late date, and affords a rare instance of weak verbs turning into strong; the reverse is more freq. the case. -
