Энтузиаст или эксперт — film buff, theatre buff, telly buff и т. п. Сначала слово buffs означало людей, которым нравилось наблюдать за ликвидацией пожаров и даже добровольно принимать в этом участие в качестве помощников. Их называли buffs, потому что они имели одежду темно-жёлтого цвета (buff от buffalo — буйвол), а может и потому, что они носили зимой одежду из буйволовой кожи. Надо полагать, что из-за такого тяжёлого облачения эффективность их помощи была невелика, и поэтому профессионалы отрицательно относились к ним. Сейчас buffs означает людей, действующих из лучших побуждений, но без необходимой подготовки. Это слово имеет и другое значение: in the buff значит нагишом; to strip to the buff — раздеться догола.
